I am curious of opinions on this x-ray.  Obviously the positioning could be a little better.  Do you think it would make a difference on the outcome?

I don't think so. Sorry.

I wish better positioning would make a difference. But in my opinion, I don't think it will.  Sorry.  Sad Smile

The positioning SHOULD BE A LOT BETTER. Better positioning will help the overall grade and improve the left hip view. How old is this dog and what breed is it?
Can you enlarge the view and repost it? It's hard to see the complete hip configuration on my screen.....of what I can see the right hip looks abnormal....socket is very shallow.

I'm sorry--the hip on the left side of the xray has very little socket and you can already see degeneration and remodeling of both the femoral head and the socket. The right side of the picture, the hip is better and is not showing as much remodeling, but it is not good, either. :(

Right hip is mostly out of the socket. Rotating the knee in so it's in the same position as the left knee is likely going to make it look even WORSE!

Positioning for the x-ray is not optimal, but it's not horrible either. Both knees need to be rotated inwards by an inch or two, and the pelvis is more or less level.

Looks to me like you will need FHO....

your x rays are very similar to my dogs x rays at 6-8 months when we first noticed the limping and eventually it got worse..
below is a pict of Baileys x rays at approximately 12 months old and based on this we decided to proceed with surgery..

this pict below is post FHO....

2 years later you cant tell a difference from other dogs or that she had surgery, she has no physical restrictions in running, jumping, etc... rehabilitation (physic. therapy) is the key.
feel free to contact if you need help.

I didn't figure it would do any good.  X-ray was done last week on an 11 month old male German Shepherd.  I just purchased him from a breeder who guaranteed his hips.  I had the x-rays done as I noticed right away he was favoring his left leg and mainly bunny runs.  He also has a very thin back end, which I chalked up to still being a puppy.  But a handful of people who just met him also noticed something wasn't quite right.  The breeder never noticed anything.

jlb4yoda.....I am so sorry...
we started with bunny hops too...
for now I would recommend doggy aspirin to take down inflammation, also our dog would lay on that hip in a doggy pool even in the middle of the winter if she ran for a while...eventually after any exercise i would have her lay on the dog bed with a bag of frozen peas on her hip...that got us by till surgery in spring.
