Mentayflor,

Would you be kind enough and explain what bear vs dog baiting is.

Ibrahim, I'm surprised you have not heard of it.   Very ancient
'sport',  (just about all over the world, in different eras) where a
bear - usually a Brown Bear but not exclusively - is either taken
from the wild, or occasionally captive-raised, and kept for the
purpose of having dogs (various) set upon it.  The bear occasionally
gets a hit on the dogs, but generally the dogs get the better of it
and it is torn to pieces, unless the 'game' is stopped before the
bear dies.  Bets are placed on the outcome.  Apparently still quite
a prevalent 'entertainment'  in out of the way places like the Ukraine.
Cruel and unnecessary.

Not to mention that RC uses questionable fillers such as beet pulp, that are not well tolerated by many dogs, & have been implicated by many vets & veterinary surgeons in a significant number of bloat & intrasusseption cases.
Just sayin' !!!

While this is clearly cruel and not a sport.
Does a company like Royal Canine really support bear baiting? Or did some A-hole buy a bunch of bags of dog food as prises and RC is taking the blame?
This is clearly a PETA type promo. And reminds me of the image from a while back of a dog fight in the asian (China/japan/korea) area where the fight is being held in a bar and the banner for Heineken can be seen in the background. People were calling for a ban on Heineken, who i'm sure had no idea that this bar was holding dog fights.
I want to see real proof that RC is actually sponsoring this event and not just an innocent by standard.

VERY Good point, Fry !

I know ppl have reservations about RC as a kibble, but I always
point out that here in England it is a food which does not seem
to contain all the rubbish quoted from other points of sale;  and
I used to feed multiple GSDs on it without problems, the main
reason I don't use it today on my one remaining dog is price.
I can get other food which suits him better at cheaper cost.

If this IS really happening, I'd be all for supporting a boycott
[i e  in not recommending RC to anyone else];  but I'd need to be
sure first if this story is actually true.  The poster shown is
clearly NOT produced by RC themselves;  and I'd be careful
about just WHICH '4Paws' is involved too;  that name is one
of the perfectly respectable Rescue organisations, but it is
also used by a PETA 'front', I understand.  Had not heard any
shred of this support for bear baiting from any other source, so
far.

I too, would like to see proof. Their gastro intestinal Medi cal vet prescription diet saved my dogs life at the beginning of her EPI journey. I would have to say, that I have quite a soft spot for this company and I simply cannot believe they would sponsor such a hideous sport. I have cut and pasted an article from Forbes magazine about Royal Canin, in case anyone is interested. They are an expensive food because they hydrolyze the proteins so they can be easily digested by dogs with allergies, digestion issues, liver and kidney problems etc...This process isn't cheap, as well as the staff of veterinarians they have must not be cheap either. And no, I do not work for the company, in case anyone is thinking that.

I just got an email reply from RC.  This happened in May, apparently.
Their local office agreed a sponsorship deal with a Ukrainian Dog Show.
The promoters failed to mention they were also putting on Bear Baiting
at the event.  RC are covered in remorse, when they found out they
issued an immediate Press Release saying they had not known, if they
had they would have refused the application, their sponsorship staff are
all being reminded to check into things deeper, they are appalled at this,
it does not fit with any of their views and principles on animal keeping,
etc etc.  Even thanked Four Paws International for alerting them to the
problem.

So I think we can safely say it was an error on RC's part, and NOT an
on-going habit or preference for which they should be boycotted.

A BEAR BAITING EVENT AT A DOG SHOW;  how sick is that?  How about boycotting dogs being bought and sold to the Ukraine?  That suits the problem better.  Nan

Ahh, see not everything is as it seems. Just about any dog food company in the world would not want to be associated with this sort of bad press. The whole thing didn't make sense. Glad to see RC took care of the problem and the real question is were the promoters of the bear bating in the Ukraine arrested or was this swept under the rug? Also i'm pretty sure that no GSD were attending the bear bating this is most likely either a pit bull even or a mastiff event.
Nan is right, boycott the dog promoters by not buying their stock.
