I don't find any one product to be all things for all people, pets and situations; generally, I've had good success with Frontline Plus spot-on, but where I live isn't a great habitat for flea infestations. This year is the first time I've ever found a tick on one of my dogs since we moved up here in fall 1999; I keep the brush trimmed on the property, and check the dogs over physically on a daily basis anyway, so I don't do anything beyond the Frontline Plus for tick repelling. If I were living in FL, OTOH, I'd probably be rotating products and treating the indoors regularly, I'd be treating the yard and lawns with nematodes that prey on flea larvae, and I'd use a fast-knockdown pyrethrin product when necessary as well.

I suppose the best defense against fleas and ticks would be to live in a place where the climate never warmed up enough to permit them to exist. Be a bit of an economic hardship, though, I'd expect.

I live in florida and in Tampa where most pest control companies test their products and i don't have a flea problem. I also have a hugely lush and currently overgrown lawn. No fleas and ticks. The reason i can keep the bugs at bay is because if i suspect a squirrel, rat, possum or raccoon i get them out of my property ASAP.  They are flea and tick vectors.
If my dog has fleas i have a possum in the yard. Sometimes i even treat the possums when i release then so i don't give fleas to other areas. ( I use a spot on safe for cats)
I have not purchased any thing other than heartworm preventive this year.
And i regulary go to both a dog training club and a IPO field and still no bugs. And my dog sleeps in my bed so i check her very often.

(Also ticks seem to get worse the further north you go. Canada has some sort of tick that is killing moose. And i heard the black flies and mosquitoes are horrible in Canada in the summer. I'll stick to florida thanks!)

If you wash your dog wait 2 days before applying the product if it's a spot on. If your dog is not currently dirty then use the product and wait a few days before bathing. The reason i've been told by the drug reps is that the products get spread faster if your dog is coated in it's own natural oils. Washing removes much of the coat and skins oils and tend to hold the flea product to the spot applied.
If you using a flea pill like Comfortis then washing will not affect product.

what about a good dewormer

by hexe on 26 July 2013 - 22:07

For a basic wormer, I like fenbendazole [sold OTC for dogs under SafeGuard]. Pros: Broad-spectrum [rounds/whips/hook/Taenia tape], gentle enough to give to a pregnant female and 6 week old pups and available w/o prescription & inexpensive. Cons: Must be given over course of 3 days, doesn't get the species of tapeworm most commonly found in dogs [Diplydium].
