I am new here and was referred to this board as a place where I could ask about hip and elbow x-rays. I'm hoping that those who are knowledgable would share their opinions with me. I was wondering what these x-rays would receive if submitted to OFA for evaluation.

Dog 1

left elbow

right elbow

Dog 2

right elbow

Thanks!

IMO dog #1 is better, hips are nicely seated and x-rays are good enough positioning - ofa good .  Dog #2 the knees should be positioned more "inward" to make the hips look the best, as is they could be a little tighter, maybe the sockets a little deeper - but I still think passing maybe "fair".  I think both are passing ofa.  I don't read elbows.

Thank you Molly! I appreciate your input. Maybe I will take her (Dog 2) back in and have her re-done. They did it without sedation, so it shouldn't be an issue. I have no clue about anything related to elbows. haha. The only thing I know how to see on hips is if they are obviously dysplastic. Beyond that, I am clueless. Thank you again!

I wish someone would read the elbows for us as I too am curious as what to look for.  I'm learning what to look for on the hips but have no clue on the elbows.  The hips look good to me, but I'm still learning so don't go by what I say.  Good luck on the OFA.

Thank you all for your opinions. I am taking my female (dog 2) Wednesday to try for slightly better positioning before I send everything out. I am very happy that you all think they will pass. That is a huge releif. The vet felt they were both 'good', but you never know if they are telling the truth or just trying to make you feel better.

I am no expert either but dealing with dysplastic dogs and being a veterinary technician for many of years I have learned alot. First of all the resolution of the film is not as clear as it should be. The resolution could be a little darker allowing a clearer picture. That obviously has nothing to do with the dogs themselves but can sometimes play a role in how well the specialists can read them. Both dogs are positioned well but not perfect. They are straight, meaning the spine does not curve, however sometimes when they position them they are so focused on keeping them straight that they dont pay attention to skin or fat bunching up around them. That too is important that the limbs AND skin naturally hangs/sits because when it bunches it puts pressure on the inner body (obviously) sometimes creating an illusion of crowdedness, making one hip slightly better or worse based on leverage, tightness, etc. Again has absolutely nothing to do with the actual dog. Based on the positioning of both dogs I too would say that they both will pass OFA. Dog1's right hip is more at risk of becoming victim to arthritis because their is more space at the head of the femur, as of now it is no threat but possibly 5-6 years down the line it may. Left elbow is better than right but will get normal anyhow as they should not cause any problems. Dog 2 hips do not set as deeply as Dog 1, Dog 2 seems to have the better of the elbows. The left elbow could have been positioned closer to the body. Again I am not an expert but based on the images you have displayed that is my assessment. lol Good luck with everything and keep us updated when you get the "supposed correct judging" (I pray you don't get a horror story of this as some have with OFA)
