UschiRun

by UschiRun on 17 July 2013 - 13:07

Earlier today on Facebook, I was perusing a liked page when I saw that a woman was asking where she'd be able to get a designer puppy: the pomsky. After looking up info on these dogs, I felt like smacking my forehead in frustration. I posted some hopefully helpful info for the woman, but her main concern for getting a pomsky was because they're "sooooo cute!"  Confused Smile  Any website I've looked at does not list any helpful information: the puppies are so "cute" and "furry" and "striking" and well golly gee whiz there's just no health problems on record- or at least, none that these websites were willing to talk about. As if any dog breed out there has absolutely no concerns at all, let alone mutts with no general guide for temperament or character, or even what the ratio is for bloodlines (a pomsky can be 50/50 or can be 25/75 in terms of breeding poms and huskies).

I'm sorry, but this is just dumb. What Smile

Makes me ill to think about. This woman would be better going to the local rescue or shelter and saving a life rather than wasting money on some mutt pup described as "designer". The shelter dogs are every bit as "degisner" and make wonderful pets. I just have to wonder what some people are thinking when they look for these kinds of puppies. The puppy mill people must be so happy!

I have had husky X's, many of them. They have been the BEST all around dogs i've ever had.
My first was a husky X Aussie, my best dog and probably my "once in a life time dog". The others were my husky/ wolf of varying dilution, which I posted the pictures of a while ago.
In my experience, I think the husky improves any breed it is crossed with , the same way the Arabian horse does for any breed it's crossed with.
I've seen collie/husky, chow/husky (my sister had till the dog died at sixteen), GSD/ husky, sharpei/husky....all good dogs. I bet a pom/ husky would be.....huggable. :-)

The use of the term hybrid to describe mutts leaves me annoyed. If these were hybrids, there would be no need to spay or neuter, & no second generation 'Pomskies'. Mules are hybrids. True hybrids cannot reproduce, they are sterile. This is not a new 'class' of dog. Whoever wrote that little promo apparently had as little grasp of language as they did of biology, particularly canine biology. Pushes several of my crazy buttons! jackie harris

Damn little creature is adorable though, isn't it? People just don't get it. Remember when cock-a-poos were the rage? We had clients paying $1,500 back then to Doktor's for one of them with the promise that AKC was in the process of "approving them". When I had Malamutes, a friend who bred Rough Collies and I always joked that we should create a new breed - Mal-N-Collie Babies.

Seriously it is a shame, but it's never going to end.

No doubt they are cute little buggers, I'm not a big fan of little dogs, but I had an Irish setter/Husky cross once, & he was an awesome, awesome dog!!! Ziggy was smart, biddable, protective, & a very handsome dog, Husky coat with the eyeliner all in shades of auburn, with blue eyes! Folks would stop & stare, he was very striking!
So I agree about Husky improving other breeds, but I have issues with the whole designer dog thing, & the general attitude of dogs as toys! jackie harris
