Just curious as I have heard mixed reviews on importing pregnant females and the negative impact it has on the end result of the litter versus importing the female and then having her AI. What say the group? Thanks for any insight!

We did it last year and she had 8 pups 6 weeks later, no ill effects what so ever....
We were a little concerned but she is a trooper and handles everything!

I thought you could not AI from a stud in Germany to the US. Is that an allowed option?

I have never used AI so can't comment. Sent one bitch several times to be bred with no problems. Did have a problem with the second bitch. Puppies were very small and all died within 3 days. I think the most important thing when sending a bitch to Germany is that they keep her for at least 2 weeks. Try for 4 and hope for 2.

One thing to consider is how well the bitch can handle stress? You send a bitch with weak nerves I would think the stress could cause problems.

Unless the rules have very recently changed, to my knowledge a litter known to be produced by AI cannot be registered with the S.V.. Of course I am sure that some of this is done on the QT, as it (non-surgical version) can be done by a breeder who knows the procedure. Some bitches can be very tough for even a fiesty and randy stud to mount and remain unharmed!
I am not sure if the practice alone can cause a breeder trouble with the S.V., especially if the bitch is sold and shipped away from Germany. But I am sure that it is something they do not advertise!
As far as transportation of the bitch after impregnation, there are certain windows of safety during different periods of the pregnancy. From the top of my head I can't say what are those periods, but the knowledge of these is critical for success.
Judy, good observation. DesertRangers, I agree about the nerves of a bitch determining whether a litter can be whelped successfully. That applies even for one who is bred and stays at one's own kennel.

For those adhering to USA/SV protocol AI is not an option, for AKC anything goes. Shipping bitches between 28 and 35 days in welp has proven quite safe and has a high success rate. I do suspect that many times SOME of the pups may be reabsorbed depending on the timing and conditions etc. Best Wishes, Jonah
