Vet probably sells Science Diet. Don't even listen to that opinion. Stay with what you have and next trip to buy a bag, get whatever else your investigating brings you to. Don't worry too much, your puppy wont be ruined for life over a bag of food.

I've fed canidae off and on for years. If you want more protein, go to the chicken/rice formula it's like 26 or 28% protein. I've weaned puppies onto this formula and adults alike. You can look on canidae's website to find a retailer near you, or order from the distributor is sometimes possible. I haven't heard of structure.

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ From what Ive seen here, SCIENCE DIET SUCKS!!! Id never give my dog that crap. My vet gave me a free bag of IAMS here and I threw it away. I feed my female pup Timberwolf southwest chicken and herbs. Timberwolf has free shipping as well. I feed my male Innova EVO RF, but hes 2 years old. What Ive found is, the more you pay, the better the food is. Stay away from anything sold in a grocery store. A lot of people on here feed Royal Canin, but from what ive read on that website, it seems that RC really isnt so hot of a food. I think Canidae is a pretty good food, may just wanna stick with that.

Most vets are not experts on canine nutrition; breeders know more than they do.

An important point to remember is that most vets only get one semester of nutrition in college. So unless you have a vet that's really interested in it most don't know that much. Science Diet really isn't a very good food. This site has a ton of good nutritional advice www.greatdanelady.com and has a good dog food comparison chart.

yup, you're gonna hear a lot more bad about science diet than you ever hear good. most everyone tries it at some point, but it doesn't take long to learn that their advertisements are rubbish and dogs really don't do well on it. the only thing i can figure is that the vets get a % of the sales.....must be the reason they push it so hard.

I have fed Canidae dog food for years and I have never had any problems. Seems like any dog food website I have visited to compare different brands always has Canidae listed as very good.

I feed Royal Canin Maxi Puppy or GSD 24 and have had excellent results with many, many GSDs. Canidae is a decent food, but I never could keep some of the stools from certain dogs firm, so I switched several years ago. Others on this board feed it successfully. Science Diet is certainly not a premium food. There are others like Eagle Pak, Breeders' Choice, Wellness etc., that too are good. I generally feed pups a protein level of about 32% or so, but it is mostly the calcium to phosphorus levels that are so important in pups. Yes, most vets sell Science Diet and that may have influenced your vets suggestion. I would NOT be adding any type of supplement to the pups diet if you simply feed a quality puppy food. Too many vitamins and minerals can be problematic just as too few.
Good luck.

I feed Canidae also, and found all my puppies do very well on it. A puppy will eat till his nutritional requirements are met. I actually order Canidae from the manufacture, 20- 40lb. bags at a time and have 6 dogs and 2 puppies. I have a mal that has grown up on Canidae and is a really dog. Coats are all shiney and stools are good. My trainer bought into my order and his dogs all had soft stools and he didn't like it. He feeds Euk. though.
