Let me preface this by saying that my inside girls are 99.9% reliable when I leave them alone, the do get ticked off if the house is empty for hours on end occasionally though. Having said that, the kids and I came home from the in-laws house after maybe 6 hours and found... MRE empty foil packages all over my bedroom. Ok, some may wonder why there are MREs in the bedroom... long story but you never know when the power will go out etc... SO, apparently SOMEONE, or should I say SOME DOG (probably the really fat looking one at this point in time) had decided that it would be great fun to tear packaging open and lick the contents out. Um.. ew. For anyone who has not tried an MRE, they are not exactly tasty and kind of smell like, well, dog food. BUT they were SEALED. Nice. I'm not horribly worried about the meals themselves being eaten, nor the dog not pooing for a few days (MREs have a tendency to do that), but what does slightly concern me is the high sodium content of the meals. They were carefully torn open, packaging not eaten (I'm sure they blame the cat!!) so I'm not worried about that either. Anyone else experienced this? Ha ha.. shot in the dark but worth a try. She has on a very rare occasion eaten a whole loaf of freshly baked bread or 5lbs of ground beef off the counter (She is 8 and I can count 3 times in her life that its happened, so not a particular problem in and of itself... bad owner should have known better but these were SEALED ha ha). I do have to say that life is never dull around here ha.
This is more of an OMG I can't believe my dog did that kind of day..

No experience from me, but working it out..... High sodium can cause kidney issues. I would recommend getting the dog to drink lots of water to flush out.

As a regular diet, it would be a problem, but so long as none of the MRE's contained raisins, there shouldn't be much of an issue, save for the increased thirst and probably an increased demand to go out to pee...

Yup, slightly increased thirst, no raisins. Not even main meals mostly, just the breads, peanut butter, cheese etc.. that come with them. Gums are pink, capillary refill normal, resting comfortably although looks like she's eaten a big meal. I can expect it to be about 3 days for a BM and no dinner tonight. Probably consumed enough calories for 3 days...
Just one of those face palm kind of days... doh. MREs have been moved to a non dog accessible area.... just wow. You just have to shake your head and wonder.

Looking through the trash more closely has determined that Haley was on a junk food binge (these would each be 1 human serving). 3 packets of syrup, one package of pretzels, one package of hot and spicy cheese its, 2 packages of saltine crackers, 2 packages of plain butter type cookies, one package of granola cereal w/blueberries, one round cookie, one packet of bbq sauce, 2 packages of wheat bread. Alrighty then.

LOL! She certainly does have an adventurous palate! Look at it this way...she revealed that the previous storage location was not dog proof, thus preventing you from ever stashing anything that could truly harm them, or was extremely valuable, in that spot. Just a dog doing her job, making sure things were secure in the house.

Oh Melissa I SOoo feel for you ! How awful, to come home and
have all the worry & mess of that little adventure. Great that no
real harm has come from it; Hexe makes a great point about now
knowing that's not a secure storage point. Isn't dog ownership
the most special thing, tee hee hee ?

Hee, hee, hee! Amazing how they can get those little packets open!
Ranger got into the Halloween candy once, and very neatly opened two Nibs licorice packets. He somehow tore both packets along the seams, so they were only one layer thick, and completely flat!
I'd have trouble doing that myself without a pair of scissors!
And lucky for me, I caught him before he ate any more. Licorice is very laxitive!

LOL! Yes, that storage spot is no more (though they had been there for over a year! Ha ha) and the most ironic part is that I was cleaning out the closet so had put the stash in a box to be moved out to hubby's building into the deep freezer today.
After about 1.5 gallons of water between last night and this morning, there was a puddle in front of the back door, but I kind of expected that. No biggie.. she's ok, my floor will live. Urine is clear. The other GSD did have a slightly discolored, runny BM this morning so I'm positive Syd snatched at least a few morsels from Haley last night. Still not that horrible, Haley has the garbage gut... Syds is slightly sensitive and her BM ratted her out.
I wouldn't have my mischievous girls any other way... you know, just when ya think you've figured em out, they throw you for a loop ha ha.

↵My friends curly coated retriever got into there closet unzipped a backpack that contained a bunch of power bars. Ate them all She survived no ill effects. Dogs can be very resourceful can't they?
