1. The bitch must be Brucellosis negative (no older test than 1 month prior to the breeding). My stud is tested yearly and never bred to any dog that is not proven negative. 2. Bitch must be hip certified. I don't want displastic pups blamed on my stud dog. Once a stud has a reputation for producing bad hips he doesn't get used. I need to protect my investment and future of my stud's bloodlines. 3. Bitch must be in good health, have good temperament and have no disqaulifying faults. 4. The pedigree. I always have a look to be sure the dogs are not too closely related and to see what the pedigree might give for a clue about what to expect from the pups. Whatever gets produced, good and bad, falls on the stud dog. If you're sure to start with something most closely matching the quality of the stud, the better off you'll be. Of course many also require adherence to the German Standard for titles, amd bred surveys. Excellent practice. Some things you just don't need to learn the hard way.

FYI Sue-Ann, a bitch needs to be tested DURING the current heat cycle in order to make the test worth anything!! Brucella will only show up during the heat... She should also have a vaginal culture and sensitivity done.. as a preventative I put my girls on antibiotics (Baytril or Orbax) as soon as they come in to heat .. that way they can be well inot the course of meds by the time we get a C&S back form the lab. Please note, there is normal bacterial flora that will grow as well as the bad.. Your male should also have testing done for odd bacteris, he can just as easily pick something up and transmit it to a female.. he licks the ground and then cleans himself.... I could go on, but I have a busy day and will probably get myself in trouble.... I'm pretty good at that....

Sue-Ann- "Of course many also require adherence to the German Standard for titles, amd bred surveys. Excellent practice." These "standards" were to reduce and lower the number of breedings. Not a quality measure but a quota one.

wiener. Quality, quota...I think it accomplishes both don't you? Thanks for taking the time to clarify though. DKiah, I agree there are MANY more safeguards one can and perhaps should take to ensure no odd strains of bacteria are interfering with fertility. What I listed I think are *bare* minimums.
