Hello, newbie to the forum here. Was wondering about our rescue pup, we've had him since he was 4 months. We thought he was a GSD but as he's growing and developing he's looking more Malinois. He's 8 months now, weighs 53 lbs, 24" at the shoulder. He seems smaller and leaner than most male GSDs. He is energetic, smart, very driven. Here are some photos. Thoughts—GSD? Mal? Mix? Trying to upload photos...

I'd say that's a Maligator pup -  crossed with Dumbo !
Has he grown into those ears as he's got older ?
Don't see any GSD;  but he looks like a sweet and
lively puppy, so have fun with him.

Ha—yes, the ears are pretty epic. So far his body hasn't caught up yet and they seem to get bigger each week!

I lean heavily on the mal side too, but those are some impressive ears. Hopefully he'll get a head to fit them! He's cute.

I would vote for Malinois. HUGE ears! :-) Red sable coloring. Looks like my Mal's coloring. That is 100% not a GSD, but a Malinois.

it may have some GSD in there, ears are not a factor but that face, forehead the eyes....something so very GSDish....the body structure is on a Mal side...but he is also very young...can still fill in..

here was mine at 6 months....sable GSD...those ears were bigger than her face..

6 months.

He looks 100% malinois to me.

My lines have foreheads and eyeset like his. I know of lines that have large ears too. The rest of his body will grow more to match his ears - his head will even broaden. But right now his ears, nose and legs are going thru that normal awkward puppy growing stage.

Have fun. He is a cutie. Enjoy this stage!

No, LF, anyone looking at your pix of your bitch would
say "That's a GSD", so why can't you believe the reverse
is true of the OP's puppy  LOL ?  Unless they have some
evidence that there could be a GSD somewhere in the
background, I really don't know why vwit's asking the
question that way - unless they got the puppy when he
was VERY small, I can believe someone unfamiliar with
the breeds might have speculated at that point.  All LITTLE
puppies look alike to some.  We have speculated on how
much a lot of shelter workers keep getting it wrong, and this
 was a rescue ...

Thanks for the insight everyone. Yes, I got him from a rescue when he was 4 months old. I was originally looking for a GSD to rescue and he was listed as one. At the time he was so puppyish and very skinny from malnourishment that it was hard to tell otherwise. Having had GSDs in the past I don't know as much about the Malinois breed but they seem like amazing dogs and he is shaping up to be a great companion! Of course we love him no matter what he is, but it would be helpful to know what breed he is so we know where his instincts are coming from.

Oh, one more thing. He does this thing where he sits in front of us and "clicks" his teeth when he's excited or needs to go potty. We just thought it was a funny quirk but I read that's thing Mals do, someone called it a "Mali Clap" or something.... is that accurate?
