Hi all, I have one dog for several years now and since 2 months after I got him he started being itchy. I have tried several dog foods as I suspected a food allergy. Currently on RC maxi 24. He has no fleas. No red spots or bumps on the skin. Not related to season of the year or altitude.
I have an itchy dog too..have taken her off of dog food, started on chicken and fish...fish every day. it is making a big difference.
You must try Doctors Foster/Smith healthy coat allergy tab with healthy coat omega-3 gel caps, work really well on my dog with the same problem. (DrsFosterSmith.com)
The only thing that helped my "itchy bitchy" was RAW!
I tried alot of different dog foods including Honest Kitchen..
Het, Do you mean to kill a fresh chicken and fish everyday? I can buy it at the store. . Is that what you mean? From the store or kill it. Does it matter? I mean,do you need to have all the bones etc. in there or do you buy people food for them? I just want to find some way to make him comfortable and not itchy. My ex- friend told me I shoud put a whole chicken in a pot and cook it,but that creeps me out.Feathers and all?

My female was recently diagnosed with inhalent allergies so now we're giving allergy shots every 3 days. I know that's not one of the problems you cited. However, one of the things that showed up on her skin test which totally surprised me was that she was allergic to fleas (among other things)!!! I've never seen a flea on her nor even a flea bite. She's always been on Frontline Plus as well.
Have you tried an elimination diet if you suspect a food allergy? Best of luck to you. I know it's so frustrating watching them itch and itch!

No you do not have to kill a fresh chicken or go fishing everyday...LOL!
There is alot of good info out there for feeding a fresh, natural and or RAW diet. Just Google it..
Here is a sample diet from Leerburg:

I bought a small book from him, that is easy to understand and reasonable, sold on his website. Its called Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats by Kymythy Schultze.
I do not follow it to a Tee. There are also sources out there where you can find good quality meat for less than grocery store prices. You need to be aware if you go this route it can take some time to make your dog comfortable as they go through a detox period. But if you do your homework I bet you will find it works. The drawbacks are it takes a bit more tiome than scooping from a bag, but I have found it actually less expensive. I do have a great outlet for deer and venison trim that basically cost nothing and the chicken I get are Hutterite stewers, very cheap...$20 a 60# box. All my dogs are on this diet and I never had coats like this on any dog food.
Hope this helps.
You might have the dog checked for pyoderma, a bacterial infection of the skin.
Adding a bit of lard to the dog's diet (a suggestion from Birdy!!!) has worked great for my dogs' coats. :)
I have also found that salmon oil and peanut butter seem to help (high fat content!)
I have not fed raw but one month, and am not familiar with the in's and out's, but I do know you have to do it properly for it to be nutritious (which is one of the reasons I switched back to a high quality kibble). For me, it was too much work with having multiple dogs that I feed multiple times daily.
Good luck, and let us know what worked!! :)
go raw meat no cooked chicken, Cooked chicken bones are dangerous/ u feed raw chicken , raw liver, organs and muscle meats, vit c and vit e, fish caps and make sure meat is fresh and almost frozen when u feed , If dog doesnt eat in 1 hour throw away, Feed small amounts so dog will eat all. You can feed 2 times a day. Yes it takes time to bag a weeks worth and freeze and remember to thaw everyday and feed. Its worth it on an itchy dog. Have u tested for Dermadectic?
gsdlvr, Have you ever tried bathing in Betadine ?
It may help it may not, But if it does might be a cheaper fix then all the other food stuff.
it might be worth trying anyway.
Good Luck.
