I was upstairs and heard this barking. I look out the upper window... and panic! I see the commotion is because of this...

I am pretty sure it is a snapping turtle... heading back to the water, somewhere beyond our land.
I couldn't let the dogs stay out and risk getting bit. I put them in the house... and grabbed my iphone, of course, lol!

And off "she" went... all the way to the back yard... and beyond. I wanted to see if my dogs could or would track the turtle. I could see the belly path in the grass, even though the turtle wasn't around any more. I told both dogs to find the turtle starting in the front yard ... and with a little help pointing... by golly off went Beau... then Mojo.  They both got sidetracked when they came upon the woodchuck lair, but then my Rhino baby came back to the turtle track ... and followed it all the way to the end .... barred only by our the e-fense.

I just realized that was my first "track"! How fun was that! LOL

Yes that's a common snapping turtle. Smart move on your behalf to remove the dogs until she was gone.  It's egg laying season and water turtles are on the move. Looking for a nice place to dig a nest. Snappers can do soem real damage and they jump, pretty scary to see a 40lb turtle lunge at your dog.
Have fun and be safe with your critter tracking.

Dragonfry is right... something this size out of water.... around here... can only mean snapping turtle! Stay away! lol My DH picked one up once, thinking he'd "save" it and it peed all over him. That was never an option for me! lol

I think this one is all working lines, Kim. Observe the single mindedness of purpose! See the "track impression" in the grass, that is a long way! lol

Except for the baffling situation of the milk jug block. I had to step in. I had a sudden feeling akin to a "turtle" moment of apprehension; that this black towering object in her path was causing a real dilemma, as I observed her progress had shut right down.

Sitasmom, I've heard so many tales about losing fingers and toes to snapping turtles I'd be hard to convince otherwise!
I don't think she's coming back.... not until next year, I hope! Can't imagine where she'd lay her eggs around here?
Last I saw, she was hauling turtle tail, on out of here!

Wink Smile.

Oh my...a Working Line Snapping Turtle......I'll bet it has a crushing bite and good grips. Lets hope it was OFA'd before it was bred.
Louisiana or Czech lines? Any ideas

Snapping turtles only come out of water to lay eggs, or relocate. as dragonfry said, This is the time of year they lay eggs too

Any where there is sand or dirt is a good place to lay eggs. We have Alligator snappers here and they are even meaner! And have a different shell. Most all are working like as they are too ugly to show. :p
