Could use a bit of help on this whelping question.  I bred my female GSD (4 yrs old) to my 9 1/2 yr old male on Sept.22,2010. She should have whelped on the 23 (yesterday) which is the 63rd day.  Because of the males age, and because he was only bred once, 8 yrs ago, I worried he was not viable but took a chance.  So he did the deed 4 times, 3 tied the first 3 days she was put together for appx. half an hr.  and the fourth tie around the 5th day but tied only for 15mins.  She is pregnant.  Puppies moving about, I felt her stomach.

I thought she was definitely going to have the pups last night, but fell asleep and checked her early this morning 6am. Nothing.  She's in the box panting. Rectal temp was, I believe 98.9 but then this morning 99.1. She looks alert and still bouncy.  Gave her some cottage cheese, and some kibbles.  She did not want the kibbles but ate the cottage cheese. Gave her one chicken quarter she ate that, but threw up a small piece of the chicken.  I can understand that.

Question here is......should I be worried? Has anyone had a late whelp? At what point should I be calling the vet?

Your answers would be greately appreciated.

It could be 63 days from the last tie, plus or minus a day or two. That means anywhere from Nov. 24th to about the 30th.

From the sounds of it you should have puppies in about the next 48 hours.

You say she is in the box panting...is she contracting?  You'll know because she will stop panting during the contraction.  If she is straining and nothing is happening, get her to the vet.  Keep us posted.

Hiya, how is it going.i agree with melissa, your female will probably have her babies within 24/48 hours.you say she is in her whelping box panting,is she also tearing up the newspaper or vetbed that you should have lined the box with.in my opinion most bitches will refuse food 24 hours before they have their babies BUT NOT ALL DO,as my very first litter of gsds was born 1 WEEK EARLIER than the whelping date.that is unusual.she had her 2nd litter a day early.Another bitch had to be induced 2 days later than her whelping date.she only had 3 pups so had no contractions.went to vets who gave her an oxytocin injection to get her going.no 2 pregnancies are the same, even with the same bitch.if as was said in melissa,s post your female is squatting and trying to push a pup out and not acheiving it,please ring your vet and say you have a pregnant female in difficulty and you are on your way.DO NOT TAKE A CHANCE WITH MOTHER AND BABIES,INSIST EVEN IF YOUR VET HAS OTHER IDEAS.Good luck and keep us updated.i would say,in my opinion you,ll be in for a long night.i reckon she,ll present you with her babies tonight/early morning.Debi Sue is also correct tho.she could have taken on any one of the dates.just keep your eye on her.Carole S.

Years back my lab that once had a litter of 11 went to day 67 from my calculation, and had 2 huge pups nearly 2 pounds each, if she had never had pups before, she may have needed a C-section.

I notice my girls lose appettite, and sleep a lot right before they have pups, so I try & sleep when they do, cause I know I'll be staying up all night  to deliver pups soon.

Thank you all for your suggestions and help!
I am hoping it is from the last tie, but the way she's acting it could be today (or it should have been last night).  Tearing up the paper, moving about in her whelping area, and wow is her belly big!  She has been bred before, not by me but a former owner so I thought this should be like riding a bike!  Will see.  But as Moddi said earlier, no 2 pregnancy are the same.

Have been feeding her raw for the past 2 months with the occasional kibble-TOTW.  Added flax seed for the omegas, multivitamins (per vet advice).  She was seen by the Vet 2 wks ago.  Everything was fine.  She does look good, BIG and bouncy.  She is always wanting to playball, fight with a piece of hose or rag, but have restrained myself for the past 2 wks and mainly park walks...not enough exercise though.

Will keep you all in touch with her progress.  Will call the Vet also.
