I have just received a plea from a k9 handler who's dog did recovery work at the Fresh Kills land fill during 911. If anyone could find it in their heart to even donate $10 we might be able to help this handler out. Again, any help would be appreciated. Please spread the word. I am still trying to find a grant writter Please make cjecks payable to The Search and Rescue Dog Foundation send to S. Atlas 114 Moore ave. Barrington, Nj 08007. All donations will be acknowledged and are tax deductable

ok, what is the story? And why are we donating money? I understand that it is for the dog, but I am sure that people would like (I hate to say this) "proof?" or the reason behind the story?

Oh, no, please dont take offence, I didn't mean it like that, it just didn't say what for? Thanks for explaining! Its nice for someone to take the time in doing that! I will see what I can provide. I am a bit tight, but anything will be better than nothing?

Hello, I did not take offence. There are scam artisit out there. Even if everyone sent $10 and their friends sent $10 that would be great. Please help me spread the word... The 9-11 K9's and handlers seem to have been forgotten. Thank you for allowing me to post. Please remember, I did not take offence and would ask the same questions myself.

you know though, I have to throw this out there, There are many very well bred dogs, (not all GSD's) but GSD's included, That are in shelters needing new homes and have the drive that put them there in the first place, these are young dogs, how about preliming some of the rescue dogs out there and then asking if the Shelter's would donate the dog to the handler, I can't imagine that they would not. Case in Point, We have the most gorgeous, Chocolate & Rust Female Doberman, ears are cropped but they did not tape them correctly so they do not stand, She is ONLY 8 MONTHS OLD !!! Really nice drive, Temperament would continue to improve with more and more socialization, I would say she has a wonderful temperament other than being a bit shy. But she warms up quickly and then is in your lap forever. She thinks she's a minpin. Why would not some of these nice dogs in shelters be an option ?? Rather than spending 2,500.00 on a pup that might be displastic or have other health issues later in life, I mean with the shelter dogs, the adults or young adults anyway, You could still help out with cost by sending them for extensive health checks and X-rays. Just an idea.

God Bless the USA, the rescue workers, their canine partners and all that stuff, but how can someone ask for donations without giving more details than stated above. A lot more details. Is it too much trouble to type for ten minutes in order to help out whoever is in need. I am an old former Marine, former Sailor and retired cop and have seen it all. I will and have given to those in need but only after investigating to ascertain if it (my money) is actually going to assist someone in TRUE need. Wasn't it obvious that the dog was getting near retirement when he was ten or nine years old? There are many breeders willing to donate dogs to TRUE causes, if for no other reason than a tax deduction or to find a good working home for a canine that is not breedable or sale worthy. At least give us a "story" along with your request. Why is there not money available already? Doesn't The Search and Rescue Dog Foundation have a web site where the request could be verified? Who is S. Atlas? How about asking for a donated dog or pup or as suggested, get a shelter dog? I am willing to bet that you can easily find someone willing to donate a dog and help train it, in the handler in need's own city. We are talking NY and NJ here. C'mon, as the country music song says "give me something I can work with". I know that no one is putting a gun to my head and demanding that I give but it is just too easy to ask for money on the web (from partiotic peoples for patriotic causes) without some better background than an email copy of some forms. This organization as only assisted one handler so far? Is it something that just started? It has the name of an organization that has been around for quit some time.

please let me address the above issues: I can appreciate your skepticism We are a start up foundation Just got the 501 c3 last year.I have used my own funds to pay for filing fees, attoreny, accountant etc. YEs, 1 dog to start. I have just hired a web designer ,yes out of pocket. REASON FOR DOING THIS After returning from 9-11 the world trade center my k9 partner (2 months later)was diagnosed with a rare disease. She died 11 months later. I was blessed as 700 elementary school children held a walk-a-thon to raise funds for my current partner. Not all handlers want pups. Even shelter dogs cost money. I never said we were only giving money for pups. We assist the handler with the purchase of a new dog. Not all handlers want shepherds. Like many others, I have gone the shelter route. I work Urban disaster dogs. They take 2-3 years of training for basic cert. I had several shelter dogs. re-homed 1, bad hips and 2 for fear issues. It is somewhat of a crap shoot but I personally try to look for OFA parents with a history of producing good conformation, and balanced nerves. I would aslo be happy to submit news paper articles or whatever for validity. If you check out the book dog heroes of September 11 I am on page 47. Don't know what else I can provide. As I said we are just getting going. Why would a handler wait 10 years? She did not,she has been trying to save money for a new dog. Not a shepherd. As you said no one is holding a gun to your head, but I really do appreciate your questioning . thank you for allowing me the opportunity to respond sarah atlas NJ-TF1
