I have an 8 year old sch. 11 male that I am breeding with a friend's 18 month old female. Within the past 3 days, whenever they hook and my male finishes, the females pulls away just as he is locking in and he finishes outside instead of them locking. What could be going on here or what could we do. The female does not like to be held. Also could she still get pregnant this way? I didn't think so but thought I would ask. Today is her 12th day in heat.

Shes too young , wait till she is 2 and have her hips OFA certified then try again......

Whether she likes it or not,you have to hold her.

She's too young, her body is not done growing yet. A litter takes alot out of the mother. If you guys care about this dog, wait until her next heat. Then like it or not she gets bred and you hold her.

why are you trying to breed an 18month old female ??
That's not right, you have not even had her hips OFA'd yet.
What makes her breedworthy without a hip cert from OFA ? I understand of all people that accidents happen but your doing this on purpose !!!
You have alot to learn obviously, and until you go out and learn it, I would say SHAME ON YOU

Ok Zmeli, maybe my first response was a little harsh, I went back and read some of your other threads, and have to admit tha it seems that your attempting to learn about the breed, and how to "do things right" (your words)
I would then encourage you to further your knowledge base before doing something like this again, It is not ever good, or ever considered "doing the right thing" by breeding any animal without hip certs.
As I said, I of all people understand accidents happen. But I would never purposely breed without the bare minimum of Good hips certified by OFA !

thank you for the replies, yes we told him it was best to have hips x-rayed first. Echomeadows, I don't mind if you seem harsh, and yes I do know to wait until the dog is at least 2 with hips certified. My 9 year old female just passed away last year and I didn't breed her until she was 3, and she only had 3 litters. I will pass this info onto the owner of the female.

zmeli ,good for you, take care of the young bitch if you can. This is a thought also,if you don't mind, if the bitch is too young and you understand this, maybe you can say "no,you can not breed to my male until she is old enough" just a thought.

When the female is at least two and the hips have been certified she is ready to breed. I use a latex glove and K-Y Gel to lubricate the female and break the hymen. A maiden female is very tight and by doing this you will make it much eaiser for the male to enter her without possibly causing physical damage to himself or injuring her. Being abel to gain more easy access will allow him to lock inside her more easily.
You must hold the female. The male penis is bone and it will break. Then, your stud is out of commission for a long time to say nothing of the terrible pain it will cause him and the unwillingness to engage in further breeding activity in the future.
Good question and hoping that you will wait for the right age and certifications.

As an addendum and to answer your other question, yes, an "outside tie" is very effective with regard to impregnating a female.
If that is all you got was an outside tie, I would watch the female carefully for pregnancy and treat her as though she is bred. Chances are, she is.
