Hello, I wanted to share what has been going on with Prince over the last few months. Long story short:
Fleas problem started about Dec-Jan ,,,I spent countless $$$ and hours of man power ( cleaning ) on natural ways of riding our environment of these pests,,In the end it took a lot longer to tackle the problem this way and it was WAY more expense and labor intensive..However, I did avoid using the "poison"...found in the more practical treatment methods.
IMO Prince must have an allergy to fleas because I think his reaction was extreme in comparison to the overall severity of our flea problem..I spent a ton of money in natural, safe, and gentle shampoos..Some where over the counter and some I purchased from a local veterinarian office in town.
Long story short, I "ASSUMED" I was dealing with a yeast infection on his underbelly due to excessive moisture from all the bathing and Prince's licking himself due to his reaction to the flea bites. Then the nurse in me
( who apparently thinks she is a doctor ) started treating what I thought was a yeast infection ..At the time the smell seemed consistent with a yeast infection and the rationale seemed logical that it was yeast..( I better keep my day job )...
Long story short here is a picture of Prince last week...

The skin is thickened with a dark pigmintation..The odor was distinct and in hindsight not yeasty at all..but potent nonetheless..
I feel like a heel for misdiagnosing a yeast infection for what is actually a BACTERIAL infection..
My Princeyboy has really suffered due to my ignorance,,Although I still think that going natural/holistic is absolutely best WHEN POSSIBLE, I think it can be taken too far at the expense of our pets health and our pocket books as well..
Moral of the story; know when to wave the flag of defeat when home treating..I was four weeks too late IMO and my buddy needlessly suffered not only physically, but also mentally due to the mental anguish of scratching, scratching and more scratching....
The good news,,,Prince has responded miraculously to the doctors ( holistic dr. ) regimen prescribed just 7 days ago...
I would like to share it with you..
Cephalexin 500 mg cap two caps twice a day = 2000 mg daily..for 30 days with a refill if needed..
DHA Gold a whole cell algae fatty acid supplement..4 teaspoons daily indefinitely..
Raw goats milk containing lactoccus lactis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, honey, and organic cinnamon. 6 oz daily for two weeks or indefinitely..
Detox Herbal Remedy until bottle is gone...
I am amazed at the improvement even after just 24 hours..I imagine the initial improvement being from the antiobotic..I did not realize how badly Prince must had been feeling because he is like a different dog..He is back to his old self..( I could kick myself )///...
His coat has improved in a matter of days which I attribute to the supplements of DHA, goats milk, and detox serum..His energy and demeanor are night and day compared to just a few days ago..I have always made coconut oil, yogurt, and probiotics a part of Prince's daily diet,, but the results with this currently prescribed regime are significantly better and quicker..Espeacially given that Princes coat at present was not at it's best coming out of a flea allergy and a skin infection..
I will update with a new pic later,,
Just thought I would share my experience for the benefit of others..Now feel free to hate on me !!...I deserve it..Feel free to share your opinions or suggestions..

Wow! What a lesson. A very good one. The good news is, your Princeyboy is now a happy dog! Don't beat yourself up!
I never heard about cinnamon for dogs? Do you know why it is recommended? Just curious.

Thanks for the informative post.
Don't beat yourself up. We all make mistakes in trying to do what is best for our dogs and, let's face it, vets are expensive. Prince is doing good now and has no ill thoughts towards you. Now you know what to look for going forward. Sadly, I am afraid fleas will be an issue for years to come across the US, especially in the warmer regions. Winters just are not getting cold and lasting long enough to control the pests. Mine got so bad last year that I had to give in and start applying topical flea meds each month. I am not happy about it, but so far the fleas are under control on the dogs (knock on wood).

Bee,,Honestly, I am not sure,,I will do some research and get back to you..Maybe someone else knows..I have a few residents on cinnamon supplements and there was a time I researched the topic, but I forgot what it said,,lol,,,

fawndallas,,We have not had fleas in 20 years,,I was surprised too..I am going to be more proactive now that I know I am not immune to them...Honestly, the money was not the issue for me.Not that money is no object, but.I thought I was savvy enough to diagnose the problem and then self treat it..My whole vet bill for this last visit was $115.00 which was cheap in comparison to what I spent in products and my time treating the wrong thing..Thanks for your post..:)

hmm...sorry you and Price had to go through that....the bottom line is he still loves you...and we all made mistakes with the most simple things...glad it all worked out at the end...looking forward to updated photos...

holistic is great, BUT first with a diagnosis of a real vet. what I've been preaching for years.
a vet would have been less expensive than all the stuff that was given to your dog.
if your dog has flea bite dermatitis, i highly suggest you use prescription flea meds......its only humane.

As someone who is also prone to bacterial skin infections, sometimes antibiotics really are the best, fastest, and most humane treatment.
