I am about to get a new dog (3 year old) female.  And I am going to pursue showing her.  (Please know at this time I am clueless to showing.. .but know who I can contact once I have her in my possession).

She was shown as a 12-18mo old and received an SG3 ... to the best I understand the "SG" is a rating for a dog under two years of age...is that correct?   And, is this something that can be placed in her title until we move on for additional showing?

Do I look to a local kennel club, or a Schutzhund club to show?

Thanks for your help.

Do you want to show her at SV or AKC shows or both?

SG ratings are available once a dog is 12 months but doesn't necessarily mean the dog is under 2 years old.  It's the highest rating a dog can get from 12-24 months but after that they can get V or VA (at Sieger Show) ratings as well as SG, G....etc.  If you want to continue showing her under the German system you'd need to look at United Schutzhund Clubs of America or GSDCA-Working Dog Association events (assuming you are in the USA).  Once she is 24 months she will need a title to move up into the working class.  If not she would remain in the Open class but not all shows offer this class.

Thank you VKGSD.. thats just what I needed to know... prefer to show her in working dog over AKC shows, but finding it hard (been looking for about a week) to find a mentor.  IF I decide to continue in the working dog route she would need to get a BH, then work on the IPO phases.. is that correct?

To be in the working dog class you will need a SchH1 (which will require a BH) or higher, or an HGH.  Also, if the dog is over 3.5 years and presented in the working class you must have a breed survey to be eligible for a V rating (the breed survey requires BH, AD, show rating of G or better, hip and elbow certifications, pedigree, and working title).
