Hi everyone and seasons greetings,
just wanted to ask people here what their thoughts are on my nine month old pups foot positioning. You can see photos at http://www.esnips.com/web/gsdposition
They have a somewhat east to west look about them when he stands as opposed to my other five month month pup. My nine month appears otherwise OK( i think unless anyone sees anything else!).He runs fantastically well with no problems. He is a Pakros pup, and although I had thought about maybe showing him when older, I suppose this positioning would exclude him as a serious fault wouldn't it? Does everyone think I should never breed him as well? all thoughts would be welcome.

to me this looks like a problem more the the way the shoulders lie on the body. Looks like it's causing the legs to go outward. I wonder if this pup was a swimmer pup? Does he move awkwardly? Was he like this even as a young pup?
Happy New Year Board!

Hi Sue Ann,
No he has never been a swimmer pup,He has had this as a young pup as well, and although he walks OK most of the time he does occasionally have a slightly awkward looking walk with his back legs, almost swinging the rear feet outwards sometimes. He has always been that way although it seems to be becoming more normal as he gets older. I cant really explain it.
Happy new year

do you mean swing the rear feet outward in the same direction or each in a different direction? The front looks like the chest maybe narrow causing the feet to turn outward perhaps in addition to what Sue Ann states.

Yes the rear does swing outward but only when he walks slowly or casually, when his rate is more brisk then you do not see this as much. I think I should video it and post it so people can see in action.

I forgot to ask, I suppose this does constitute a major fault doesn't it? Exclude from breeding?

I'd like to see a video. It probably does exclude it from breeding, maybe not. Has the dog had hip x-rays? If so what did they show? How old is the dog now?
by klekoni on 30 December 2006 - 15:12
No, we have not got any xrays yet,-he is only 9 months old and because he seems to be perfectly happy with this and runs like a trooper and most times his gait is OK. So I think I will take a vid and post. Thanks for comments so far though!

You are to be commended to taking the time and effort to learn the breed standard before you actually breed him down the road.
I would suggest you get OfA prelims on his hips and elbows.
Good luck to you...

I completly agree with DR get the prelim x-rays,he's old enough . Might save you alot of worry.
