I was reading articles on sables and came across a article which made among others the following statement.
"The dog that dominantly produces sable does have one huge advantage, he is homozygous for shorthair,"
any thoughts or insights on this?

sounds like a quote from Arlett. I admit I am not a maven but in my experience, I have never seen a longhair sable. It does say" dominantly produces sable" so perhaps it happens.Doesn't sound like it's ruled out to produce longhairs. Just my 2cts. Been on a roll with this sable stuff today LOL

I had a homozygous producing sable female who produced 2 long coats in her first litter bred to a solid black short coated male.
Any color/pattern can produce a long coat. They are separate genes.

Is there a distiction with longhair sable working line vs showline? Has anyone a showline longhair sable? Either way ,they are beautiful. I never saw a showline one. If anyone has pictures please post
This is another interesting post

Ok but doesn't it equal 2 recessive's to equal a positive? meaning a sable without a mate with longcoat gene can not produce a longhair? Of course they are separate genes,
It says a DOG that produces DOMINATELY sable is homozygus for shorthair.it does NOT say a dog who is homozygus for sable pups produces only shorthair.

sorry I meant doesn't it take 2 recessives to equal a positive? oops

I currently have a longcoat sable pup that is seven weeks old out of Czech lines. He's the cutest puff ball I have even seen.

A dog that is homozygous for stock hair can ONLY produce stock hair. This statement is patently false and is another fantasy represented as fact that becomes a folk legend. Best Wishes, Jonah
