With all the discussions on hips certifications many have commented on the Norberg angle. I have heard it should be used for positioning but where does one find information on what that position is? We have a couple females due for x-rays and I would like to make sure the doc uses the Norberg angle.
Thanks,
Tina

Animules, the Norberg Angle is not a device used to position a dog for a hip xray; it's the angle that is measured by the OFA readers and radiologists that determines the fit of the ball in relationship to the socket.
There is a good website that shows how that angle is measured using scanned hip xrays.

I think some dogs get goods instead of the excellents we expect due to the hips not meeting the criterium for excellent per the Norberg angle measurement. That's not always obvious to the untrained eye and sometimse the vet will say this dog will get an excellent but it gets a good.

Thanks for the links. I knew it was the angle not a device, I just wondered if there were some good sites showing what then angle is/should be. Reading back my post I can see where it looked like I was asking about a device. Ooops. Typeing faster then thinking...

animules, the Norberg angle is not used for determining proper x-ray positioning. It is used to evaluate properly positioned and exposed hip x-rays. It is a general indicator of socket depth and does not describe smoothness of the joint fit. This angle analysis along with the BVA (British Veterinary Association?) criteria provide the most detailed and valid analysis of the overall hip confirmation. Unfortunately, according to Dr. Malcom Willis, the BVA schema has not been fullt utilized by the majority of UK GSD breeders.
