OFA good.

Could go either way depending on the whim of the reader(s). I think a very solid good and possibly excellent but I wouldn't hold my breath. One defect in one hip that is not consistent with excellent is all that it takes to send them to good and the photo is too small to see everything. I had a three year old that had a litter of puppies already with equal hips and she went good. The worst hip is the score so excellent/good is still good. Age at X-ray is a huge variable and comparing SV Normal to OFA good is not even close to telling the whole story and SV Fast Normal is in reality a red flag and much worse than OFA Fair in many cases. The SV system is more political than scientific. I like to see the actual x-rays and make up my own mind without the OFA spin .. the OFA is something of a disappointment in that we get soaked for $300-$400 for what is really a $100-$200 job. The genetic component in hip dysplasia is at best 50% and probably less. The genetics on HD seem to indicate multiple alleles and incomplete penetrance for one or more of those genes which in layman's terms means that environment, nutrition, and exercise are also important to whether a dog has good, fair, or borderline hips. I can recall several dogs that are the recent foundations of some of our modern bloodlines that had members of their vertical pedigree and full siblings with HD hip problems. Examples are Fero / Hero, Pike / Pollux, Troll vom Haus Milinda / Task and Grim vd PS and his father Ben Zu Bolfu. Yet people still line breed on them and those like them that followed.

They look great...but where are the knees?

by Ryanhaus on 11 April 2013 - 21:04
No Knees....that's the same question I ask when I look at these examples....

I Don't see knees.......

- Craniolateral acetabular rim
- Cranial acetabular margin
- Femoral head (hip ball)
- Fovea capitus (normal flattened area on hip ball)
- Acetabular notch
- Caudal acetabular rim
- Dorsal acetabular margin
- Junction of femoral head and neck
- Trochanteric fossa
