I know this can be a touchy subject for some but I am looking for some advise. I have a 10 month old American Bulldog who loves to chew. While I am thankful it is not on my furniture it has become quite costly. I was buying all different chew toys and no matter what the brand if he likes it it will be destroyed within a day or two. I started to give him rawhide until I heard how bad that was for your dog. He really at those up. It seems even the"indestructible toys" he can destroy. Someone had suggested to me giving him smoked bone. I did and he loved it and kept breaking off huge chunks that he swallows. I knew that could not be good for him so they suggested frozen raw marrow bones. I have given him one and he seems to love it. It was a really thick raw frozen femur bone which he was no able to break off. So two days later the bone is still in tact. My vet wants me to stay away from all bones especially the raw due to food parasites. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? How many days would a raw bone be good for? Thank you in advance for any suggestions..

Raw marrow bones are fine, but not frozen IMO. I would thaw the bones and not allow the dog to have to much time with them. I have found that my male with start to break teh bones with his teeth once the marrow is gone. This results in worn and broken teeth. Frozen bones are hard and can be brittle. I also remove the bone once the dog has had it for about an hour or so and I throw it in the garbage. I don't let the dog have bones they have left in the yard for days either.

Cool treat in summer weather .. also frozen chicken quarters etc .. takes them longer to eat them. I see no problems with teeth or otherwise. Frozen liver is like ice cream to a dog. Plastic food bowls left in the kennel or yard where the dog starts using them as a toy and carries them in their mouth are a much bigger problem for teeth than an occasional bone or frozen chicken quarter. Plastic bowls used as a toy will wreck your dogs teeth over time.

I guess it depends on the dog and how actively they chew. I have given my dog large frozen leg quarters and prefer not to. IMO, frozen bones are rough on teeth. My dog has several cracked teeth and I don't want any more. I am thinking of getting a titanium cap for one of his canines.

try antlers....i have a dog that can destroy a large kong in 1 day, I had given him beef ribs before and those didn't last a day, so yeah keeping a "destroyer" entertained can be costly....
A month or so ago I ordered elk antlers on line ( I even posted a link somewhere on here - they are not cheap) so far he chewed out the inside on a thick end so I just fill it with peanut butter or even cheese and he will work on it for hours, even on days when its empty he will chew on it when bored... so far so good no broken off pieces, no issues with antler splinting up, and I am getting my $ worth out of it.
Slam...i recently seen a friends dog who broke her both k9 and it was caped....talk about intimidating looking teeth..LOL..i mean dog was great but everytime you look at her teeth and see metal it just looks really....cyborgy. she is a sweet dog but as soon as you imagine her biting you it sends a chill down your back... :)
