So I haven't been to an AKC confirmation show in YEARS. A friend and I went today and omg I've never seen so many FAT, out of shape dogs in a very long time. Dogs had tails between their legs and wow I saw the tallest mal ever. This dog was about the size of a shepherd. Guess I've been out of the AKC show ring for too long.
What happened to labs? They are so short to the ground. How can they clear brush if they are so low to the ground they can't see over it? Give me a working dog anyday.

Your not kidding! Last time i went to a AKC breed dog the labs looked like Butterball turkey! They wobbled around the rings. The english bulldogs are so fat they barely have wrinkles. But have you taken a look at the handlers? They more often then not resemble their pets.
GSD's look crippled, If the shelties get any smaller they will be herding gerbils. Too much hair dye, chalk, hair spray and other crap.
I know Schnauzer breeder that dye their black dogs blacker. No such thing as a truly black schnauzer. :(
Crazyness!
i'll take a red neck American Bulldog show anyday. Least the standard dogs are fit, even if the Johnson are fat as hogs.

"If the shelties get any smaller they will be herding gerbils" OMG I just laughed at this. One of the danes we were watching was so ugly, had his tail between his leg and was just a mess. Placed 4th in group. There was one beautiful black dane. Didn't even place...heard the judge likes color.
One judge was so old he could barely get around to even see the dogs (judging group herding none the less
) I'm not naive to dog show politics. One of the reasons why I left. So for those who bash confirmation dogs here, they sure as hell were so much better than what I saw. Ive always said and still believe, that in order for ANY dog to get his CH, the dog needs to be able to do the job it was bred to do and title in it. Without that no CH would be given. Don't think Ill hold my breath for it to take place.

There's a damn good reason i don't own an AKC breed or enter in AKC shows. To much bullshit. I can't take it.
On the flip side nuttin' like an NKC show where the dogs are off the chain for the first time ever, lucky if they got a bath! They are shown on pinch collars and you can spot a UKC handler in the ring because they are showing on a choke chain and their dogs are stacked and can be handled. It's an eye opener! I've been to so many shows where people are trying to show for the first time and they have no clue what they are doing.
On the other hand i went to a ABRA show for "Pit Bull Terriers and other Bully breeds" and holy cow they had their pit as fat as hogs too!!!!
And the shorty bulls are horriable. Poor messed up little things.

Oh those gerbil herders? They run in the 8" class in AKC agility!

Bhaugh, you are so right. But do you realize that since GSDs were originally bred for herding, as their name so describes, that probably there would hardly any GSDs Chs, AT ALL in any country.

I don't think they were bred FOR herding so much as they were bred FROM herding stock. I thought they were bred more as a utilitarian working dog, multi-purpose. The AKC placing them in the "herding" group is not the be-all or end-all as far as what the breed was bred to do and should be doing.

VKGSD, You are so right. According to v. Stephanitz, as written in his own words, in his book The German Shepherd Dog in Word & Pictures, the GSD has evolved into what it is today and is rarely what it was created to be. The book was written in 1925 and for anyone to completely understand and KNOW exactly what the GSD's purpose WAS and how it has come to be what it is today.
I wish everyone would read this book. Its TRULY great reading. Lots of information!!!

You people should stop bashing what you saw at the show, people get real defensive if you tell the truth....just say that you saw some sweet dogs at show so people can think you are fair!

LOL @Gustav !
All breeds are created equal at shows.....they just wear different coats.

Gustav,
I don't think anyone here is being defensive. There is no need for that. It is, what it is! Like I said, more people really need to read the book I mentioned above. Once that is done, maybe they can present an argument knowing the truth as written by THE MAN himself. Who wants to try and tell him he doesn't know what he is talking about.
