It was a breeder who had a breed sharing program for lack of a better term. He would send you a female puppy 3 months old or so for free and you raised her until breeding age. At that point you shipped her back when she came in heat to be bred or they would ship frozen seamen. This was at their expense. A few weeks before birth you shippe dthe dog back to them they sold the puppies and shipped her back when they had been weaned. You did this three times then you kept the female but could not breed her and also got a puppy from the last litter with breeding rights. I had never seen that before. Anyone else encountered that before?

Hmmm....didn't know you could freeze sea men!

LOL!

Sounds like a bad deal to me. I had a breeder offer to sell me one of his females for $600. The only catch was he got to choose the male for the first mating, and got half the puppies. After that, she was mine to do whatever I wanted with her.

I personally know a woman who is the recipient of 3 females via this route with a breeder. She is happy with the arrangement,
and the breeder is happy. I would NEVER commit to an arrangement such as this, but I know of at least one breeder in NC who
does this.

here in belgium it's not uncommon, but they onley ask 1-2 breedings not 3 after that she's yours without breedingrestrictions in most cases

I also know of a few breeders who do this and as kyto says only 1 or 2 matings and then they own the bitch outright with no breeding restrictions.

interesting, how do u make sure that the bitch is properly raised, and u judged the temperment correctly, when u allow someone else to raise your dogs?

What if something happens to "your" bitch?  Like she dies or something.  Then what.  Bad idea.

I have no idea nans I just saw it when looking at pedigrees nothing I would ever do myself as the dog owner or adoption family. I do see some logic in it if you were placing it into a trainers home or something where a dog would be titled But not to just any random joe I just don't see it. Seems like a way to run a puppy mill using other people as your mill

This is a nice option. Especially with puppy prices at the 2K range. Seeing eye functions on foster homes. No breeding rights on the other end, classic and oh so bogus. I would hope the homes are well screened and a reasonable distance from the breeder. This arrangement allows breeders to have access to what they produced from litter to litter wo having to keep them as kennel dogs. Plus you could schedule your vacations when the dog goes back to the breeder for whelp, no boarding fees.

This is also done in the horse world.  Of course, a horse can only have one foal at a time, so usually it is an every other foal deal.
It isn't done as much as it used to be though.
