Hi, First Happy Holidays, Well i recieved my gift a pup, and i have her now few days, and im switching her puppy food from Iams, to canidae, and this is day 2 and she has diahrea(runs)tell me how would you do the switch??the pros out there i need your in put Please..i mixed half and half is that to much? or is it normal for a couple days to pass like this?i feel bad to see this i wanna stop the change, but i also want her to be on Canidae, food.. so please tell me what to do, years ago my other dogs never had a problem with switching food. I have to say she has brought so much joy in the house and a calmness and love. I didnt want to call the owner on christmas, and be a pest with alot small questions.thats why we have gsd data base for, you guys are great.. help....???
You may want to make the change a bit later, let the little one get settled in first and then make the switch very gradual.. in the days when I fed kibble, I would take about a week to make the change, sometimes longer..
You can also try adding yogurt to the food.. active yogurt cultures, lactobacillus and acidopholus are great for the balance of good bacterial flora.
Make sure to bring a stool sample to the vet as well, which I'm sure you'll be doing tomorrow.... the stress of her new surroundings may have triggered a parasite outbreak....
And don't feed her too much....too much food can also cause loose stools..
Good luck
Add pumpkin to her food. Pumpkin helps by absorbing the liquid in the system and adds fiber to help firm the stool. Canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) works fine. Use small amounts only, as too much can actually lead to loose stools. Sweet potatoes are also supposed to help.
Follow DKiahs' advice. Take a stool sample to the vet immediately. Let us hope that the pup only has worms or some other parasite. It could also have some infection and diarrhea is very, very bad for so young a pup. I would NOT switch the food until you make sure the pup is not sick.
Iams and Canidae can both give dogs loose stool if they have any type of problem with their gut or pancreatic enzymes. Give the pup some yogurt too.
And you SHOULD ALSO CALL THE BREEDER. It is the breeders' responsibility to help you with these issues.
I wanna thank you for your advise, shes already been to the vet the day after she came home she was fine. its when i switch the food. ill give her some yogurt, and stop her change of food till i get the vet to give me the run down on to do the switch . i hope hes in tommrow, this way ill feel alot better and the pup too. her stools were nice firm, but i quess the switch upset her tummy. she just had her shot and maybe to much at once .im in no hurry to change her food, im glade you guys are here. ill put her back on her reg, food, and im gonna go now gotta go get some yougart, my baby is spoiled love her so much.. thank you all
I would wait to switch her til she is settled also and then switch slower.
I give my adult dogs pepto bismol if they gets the runs. With a pup you need to be extra careful she doesn't get dehydrated, that could kill her. Good luck with your new baby
Giggles,Merry Christmas ,in respect to your experiance with switching to the food you mentioned mine has been the same problem LOOSE STOOLES nomatter what,I have to also tell you that it might be a better idea to find a food more appropiate for a 8week old pup, something with the right calcium, protein fat etc.In other words a LARGE BREED PUPPY food, there are plenty of good ones out there.Maybe when she is older you can try that one again. When you do switch foods in general you are always told to do it over a few day period, something like a quater cup 1 day ,then half a cup the next day etc.Hope this will help you get your little one in shape
moving an 8 week old pup to its new home creats a lot of stress to the pup. I would let it adjust for a week in the new environment. vaccines and deworms follow but not together. shifting of dog food may be done later and very slow over 1 week or more.
Giggles, Definately call the breeder, I would die if one of my buyers did not call me if they're pup was not feeling well.
There could be 1001 reasons for the diahreah, and litterally 1001 ways to treat it, first and foremost though must come the ABSOLUTE CORRECT DIGANOSIS !!!!
Absolutely take the pup in to the vet TODAY !!!
Good Luck and best wishes to you.
My vet warned me about the new pepto bismal, Donot use it . They have added a new ingredient that is an aspirin derivitive and thats mad. Pectillen for a pup and Flagyl for adults or use Immodim AD after u know pup is free of parasites or bacteria.. Food change is major cause and her nerves are upset ....new environment and stress factors......Yogurt yes, stay on food longer that she was eating.....start 1/4 new for 5 days then increas a little bit The new food may not work for ur pup....some breeding and lines have more sensitive intestinal digestion reactions to different things in the dog food,,,,trial & errow and help from the breeder if she knows her stuff or His stuff.. Vets dont know nutrition they are medical so dont be surprised it they dont recommend Science Diet food for a diahrea pup NO NONONONONO
