Sorry, I had to start a new thread, had to make that other one GO AWAY!!!! As per your find a food...
Yeah, I squish up Hot Dogs (he has a HIGH food drive..), but as soon as we get out there, he's all over the nose in the air, and heading for the "pile" at the end. Grrrr. I need to get a harness, I think that would work better, you put his prong, or Agitation collar on and he is ready to "work" and looses all interest in the "search"... He goes lightning speed, and I am having to "pull" him back to slow his big butt down....Maybe I need to find something different for him? Any suggestions? He will do a "search" (nose to the ground) in the house after my daughter takes food throught the house looking for dropped peices.. But outside... Grrrr. With my rotator cuff injury, we have really just been working on OB and are currently working on the Sit in Motion... He does the down in motion WAY better.... huh. But Time will improve all that! I am not concerned, we are looking to have fun. But I still don't have any interest in SchH.. Not to compete. Seems like people have a problem with that here.
awell! To each their own!
Merry Christmas everyone!!!
try putting the reward away from the track area.u set the pace of the track.i like ur idea of keeping it fun!!merry christmas
Never thought about putting the reward away from the actual track? Gotta try that... Any advise on what type of "food" works best? He gobbles the hot dogs like it was "gold".. Something else to help him slow down? Aside from me holding back on the leash that is..;-) I praise at each "stop"(footmark + treat) and make him pause at each one... Still in a hurry..Grrr.
Who uses tracking halters? Do they work better?
how about training him to track? That might work? He is obviously not trained - start from first step A) and then go to B, it works better that way. By the way - air scenting is not tracking, it is searching. That's why SAR folk prefer that for wilderness searches. It's nowhere near the same thing as tracking.
I would start your dog in training footstep tracking, by starting back from scratch, and not skipping steps. First step before you start is to get the right equipment. Prong or AGITATION collar is equipment that means AGITATION to the dog, not tracking. Change your equipment (fur saver, harness, prong with harness) and use it for tracking and only tracking. Use a long-line specifically for tracking. Dog will LEARN, but it takes you TRAINING him. Doesn't happen by magic.
ps all dogs naturally air-scent (search) - it's in the genes. They will not footstep-track or trail a man without being trained to do so.

We use the bottcher harness for tracking. They learn the difference between tracking harness and agitation harness. Different equipment for different portions of the work reduces confussion.
^ Better advice than I can ever give you. ;)

I was working on the "tracking"... Seemed he just prefered to "go for the gold" so to speak... i will have to purchase a tracking harness... Seems that will make all the difference, he does get all excited when I put the collar, and prong on.... But he knows the difference.. Prong only= Obedience, although I hardly need to do any harsh correction... Ball=good obedience for now... Lets see what happens when i start phasing out the ball....
This is how I lay my track....
Flag to mark the start...
put down squished piece of Hot dog, step on it, put down another piece of squished hot dog a step out, step on it...and so on...till the article...then "down".. He rushed thru it.. I guess I will try the Harness, and Prong.. To slow him down? I even did the whole "point" at each step.... and by the end. GRRRRRR...was ready to go throw the hot dog!!
About how lonng did it take you guys to teach your dogs???? And what was the training schedule like for you?
Thanks for the Good advise, and not ripping me apart. I never said I knew it all, and even though I am not into competing for SchH, maybe in the future that will change!!
I will check out the web site when I get back!!!
Thanks everyone..
Heres to Step #1 (again)
Oh, and he would make a great SAR dog... He finds my daughter all the time, when she hides, and i let him " go find" her!!! Sometimes he stars with his nose on the ground, but always ends up in the air!!! huh.
BUT...He is 90lbs... To big, and clumsy. ;-)
