Last week, I got in two dogs that belong to two different ladies who are friends. One has been here before: a gorgeous female Great Dane. The other, a large, rambunctious boxer, is new to me.
Last time the dane was here, she had an injured tail tip. It would not heal, as she was constantly bashing it against the walls and chain link fence. I used to let her spend as much of the day as possible in the 4000 square foot large dog play area, to minimize her poor tail's contact with anything solid.
After 3 days, I started to notice blood in her cage, and immediately though, "DARN! She's hurt her tail again!" Well, with the weather being below freezing, there's not a lot I can do. The owner didn't bring a coat for her, and leaving her outside for long periods wouldn't be a good idea.
As the week went on, I started to see more and more drops of blood on the floor of the cage, but strangely, very little blood was on the wall. Suddenly, this afternoon, as I was driving in my SUV, a lightbulb went on. Judging by the size of her nipples and vulva, this bitch has whelped at least one litter. Um, maybe the problem is NOT with her tail?? (At least not THAT tail?)
So, when I got home, I checked her out. I could see the thin fur on her tail tip where the previous injury had been, but there was no blood. Then, I checked her vulva...
Oh, GEE! How nice of the owner to WARN ME! Especially since the boxer, which I've been turning her out with every day is an INTACT MALE!!
They are both going to be here until the end of the month.
This is SOOO going to be fun..... NOT!!!
Sorry, boys and girls! No more mixed playdates!
I just hope the boxer, who is quite vocal, doesn't decide to start howling all day and all night, as her heat progresses!
