Two Moons

by Two Moons on 20 March 2013 - 20:03

Going down into the mid teens tonight and I just planted onion sets.
Hows your weather?

Bleedin' cold here in the UK.   And WET -  folk have been talking
about last year being an '18 month Winter', and 2013 seems to be
shaping up to be more of the same.  Global warming seems to be
passing us by.  Got an allotment / garden last year which I didn't
manage to grow anything in (except greenhouse tomatoes - oh
yes and TWO potatoes !!!).  Farmers moaning about poor harvests.
Groan ...

Hundmutter:

Two potatoes! LOL..... I sure hope they were good ones!

I have a bumper crop of horseradish right now, been growing those roots for about 15 years. Finally sent the boy out to dig them up for the St. Paddy's day recipe.  I am going to be grinding some more up today.... just makes me Cry Smile.... And we do have flurries outside today ... the first full day of Spring. LOL

Well, I bought 460 begonia's off Ebay - planted 1/2 in the ground last week and they all died 2 days ago. With that order - I bought 280 petunias - planted them the same day with the begonias and all the petunias lived. Wondering

Soo, last night I bought 480 petunias off ebay again ... planting those babies in the ground the day they get here !!

I want to get the fields going by the 2nd week in April - that will take me till the end of May to accomplish beings I bought more land last fall. I think this year too I'm going to plant a few acres of horseradish - have a roadside stand for home made horseradish like my grandma used to do. I just inherited grandma's horseradish shredder (I take it as a hint) from grandpa !! LOL

But ya, the weather is messed up - it's normally not this 60 degrees one day and 27 degrees the next... that's for sure. Although it's good for spreading manure because it's like time release absorption !!! LOL So I have no complaints really - all things considered.

Might as well get used to it I guess.
I think this cycle is just getting started and it's all new and different from the past history we have recorded.
Global warming means change more than anything else.
The seasons do not flow like they once did, they seem to overlap one another and are less predictable.
The weatherman gets his information from computer models based on past history that have not caught up with the change in my opinion, I've stopped watching him.
What I see is wind patterns and the jet stream changing, I watch satalite views daily.
As for the garden, our biggest problem here is poor soil and if it's wet you cant get an early start anymore without a raised cold frame.
We had dafodils growing through the last snow but this morning they look a bit whipped.
I started in on my emergency firewood supply yesterday after doing without for a week, my electric bill is gonna be out of this world.
My onions will probably still do just fine, the suns out now.

A few acres of horseradish? OMG. That sounds like enough for the whole state.  You have that many people who will buy horseradish? I just ground up four jars worth and I had tears dripping off my chin! I bet your grandma's grinder is a good thing to have.

Yes, we had a couple of days here when it actually started to
feel 'Springlike' - and then it snowed again.  Daffodils and Snow
-drops and Primroses all flowering, and seemingly surviving the
ups & downs.

Bee - literally two spuds, was what I dug out.  I didn't expect
a huge crop, because the chitted seed potatoes went in very
late (and the mice  got at 'em too) - but I hoped I would get a
pound or two !  Yes they were quite nice, but not very large.
One meal and that was bye bye till the next crop.Cry Smile

As the old saying goes, you reap what you sow.
Bad seed makes for a poor harvest.
I cannot grow potatoes period, the soil will not allow it here on my land.
I do get carrots but only in raised beds.
