I am just curious, and I don´t want any fight!!!
Several people are discussing for weeks now about
  1. GSDCA
  2. USCA
  3. WDA
For me as a German it´s difficult to understand. But I really wonder about how many members and about how many dogs are you talking?
Are there any statistics saying how many puppies are born within one year within one club?
German Shepherds bred by AKC standard / bred by SV standard ?

In our country there are right now around 63.000 members with 13.000 puppies born in 2012 ( within SV ).
During the nineties there were up to 100.000 members with more than 25.000 puppies born.
(Out of my memory, not sure about exactness ).
Times changed, people changed, hobbies changed, the whole lifestyle changed.

United States residents usually register all breeds of dogs directly with the AKC (American Kennel Club). The AKC allows one club per breed. For the GSD this is the GSDCA.  The GSDCA makes the Standard, but the AKC owns the copyright approves it and limits how often they can change it. You do not have to be a member to breed and register dogs.

GSDCA (German Shepherd Dog Club of America),
USCA (United Schutzhund Clubs of America)
WDA (Working Dog Association- I'm guessing a GSDCA-WDA?) Part of GSDCA

Can anyone from USA help?

GSDCA-WDA is German Shepherd Dog Club of America - Working Dog Association
Its a subgroup of the GSDCA, and works to follow the German Way.

Not to forget as the question came up before why "nobody" knows of UScA. If you register your first GSD with AKC, one will get automatically an invitation to join GSDCA in the mail.

I think I understand the history and contents of the different clubs...
But how many members are in the clubs?
Somehow needs to know, a lot of you are members of one of these clubs?!?
How many dogs ( German Shepherds ) are registered within one year ( 2012 ).
Is only AKC registering the dogs or do the single clubs have their own registration books, too?

Only AKC does the registering and so far I can't find any source, but have been told they register 40,000 GSDs a year.
It is the Second most popular breed after Labrador Retriever.

Like you Susie, I am hoping someone will tell us.

The GSD used to publish statistics of the litters of some dogs involved in AKC events and shows, but never all.

UScA said in their latest SchH magazine that they have approximately 3500 members.

AKC used to publish yearly the # of litters and dogs registered. Don't think they still do this as I have tried several times and can no longer find it on their web site. I'm operating off memory and it's been several years but I think at one time it was close to a 100,000 a year.

susie, have no idea how many are in the 3 clubs. I'm guessing less than 10,000 combined, but maybe someone can come up with something accurate.

one doesn't have to be a member of any club in the U.S. to breed dogs, so whatever the # in the clubs, there are probably several times that breeding and not affiliated with any club.

What happens with all these German Shepherds?
I assume their owners and breeders being in no club means no health testing, training, trialing, or showing before breeding.
That´s a holy lot...

Thank you @ Rik and Dawulf
That is right Susie, most never get tested and never show or trial.
