Hello everyone.  I'd like to know if any breeder still focuses on the traditional "old style" of GSD's.  I see the Czech dogs are very traditional style, however they seem very intense.  We're not looking to do Schutzhund with the dog (which is fun, tried a little with our last dog), so it'd be nice to find a breeder that breeds for family companions.  My husband and I lost our GSD about 2 years ago at the age of 12.5 yrs, which crushed us both.  He was a gorgeous dog, with some "good" lines.  He was somewhat straight in his back - more so than any others I've seen lately - but certainly not the "old style."  It's just disappointing to see the American lines (they look like they've been hit by cars - sorry, not trying to cause controversy, really, just personal opinion) and the German lines tend to have that "roach" back.  Whatever happened to the traditional breed look??!!  I don't think Captain Max von Stephanitz would be too thrilled to see what has happened to his fabulous dog!  This is what the breed is supposed to look like originally (see below), right??  So, does anyone breed them like this anymore?

Really what the hell is old style?

"I don't think Captain Max von Stephanitz would be too thrilled to see what has happened to his fabulous dog" And neither would he desire a dog that is a couch potato and has no working desire like what you are suggesting you want. Sorry if I sound like a bitch but your choosing a working dog. If the dog does not have the desire to work, then the breeder isn't doing their job. I also do rescue and I see HUNDREDS of dogs matching what your describing, sitting at the shelter waiting for a home.

I suppose I should ask what your definition of a "family companion" is?

Ey yie yie.
Why not just ask who breeds real German Shepherds?
Oh, I forgot, that concept seems to be long gone...

For a better idea of that the breed was developed into, you need to see the dogs from around 1930, as the originator of the breed had influence up until then.

Ok, just because I couldn't resist Wink Smile

Seriously, I do know their working dogs.  And, as my husband and I are active people, the breed fits well into our lives.  Ask first, please don't judge.  Our GSD was a working line - and he had a TON of drive (that's why we started him in Schutzhund to begin with).  However, it was nice to know if we went to dinner and took him with us, he could turn off and just lay quietly without so much as a peep.  I think we can all agree the breed is fantastic as a whole.  Everyone has an opinion, that's what makes the world go round Thumbs Up

Your asking not to be judged yet you are doing the same thing. Sad Smile

Perhaps you could advise exactly what your looking for (ie lines, price etc), what state your in and if your willing to ship and Im sure you will get referrals where to go. I would let go of the "straight backed old style" and embrace....health and temperament. But thats just me.
