The problem with all of this talk about "the good of the breed" is that
there is not one breed, but two breeds:
1. The working/police potential German Shepherd in the tradition of
Max von Stephanitz
2. The banana back SV show dogs.
Entirely different breeds, entirely different cultures and pretending
anything else is just silly.
Perhaps it should be Banane Zurück Schaferhund Vereine

Mr Engel; All due respect to you and your heroic effort in detailing and researching the GSD. I believe that encouraging people to get involved at all levels of the GSD world will take us farther than starting in-fighting. Revolutions take a generation to accomplish anything. Your writings should raise the level of intellgence in the community, as it is well done. You do not need to make trouble for certain blood lines [ blood directions ] An educated GSD person will further the breed. Uneducated people will look for the next easy ribbon or trophy. Please keep up the good work!

their are some good show line people i am sure of that..........but the problem with showline breeding is people will sacrifice health of the animal as long as it looks the way they want it to......
in the working dog world you cant really do that..............if dog is not healthy, well, he can't function.
i know the ideal of ideals is to have a a beautiful dog who can work...........well as long people never forget the working part of the equation all should be fine.

Eddy are you implying that only showline gsd are beautiful?
by eddyelevation on 14 March 2013 - 12:03
no not at all im just saying that showline people all they seem to worry about is having the "beautiful" dog...........and yes they do have nice coats and colours........even though i find they are too much of the same..............mostly red and blacks but thats another topic.
i am saying thay the goal for showline people if they want should not be only beauty but the ultimate ideal of beauty and work or work and beauty.

Eddy, breeders "sacrificing health of the animal" is not limited to showline GSD's, in all reality. When you make such absolute blanket statements you run the risk and will tend to alienate more than a few GSD lovers. The WL breeders certainly can find a few unhealthy specimens in their midsts, all the time. You might have noticed the ever increasing popularity for "Black Sables"? You don't think WL breeders are breeding for that as a priority, too?
What you think is happening, is SL breeders are the only one's breeding for certain traits that should be secondary, such as pigment. Would that be your take on it? What else are they doing wrong, that you know better? Are you saying that SL breeders are not breeding to standard, but the WL's are? Just would like a bit more clarification for myself, thanks!

most important question is and always should be what is or what the GSD bred for?
once all are able to answer that...then the rest should follow..............

Don't feed the troll.

And Eddy, answer that one, will you? Seems to me, there is lots of wiggle room for such a versatile breed? Hmm? You need to start being less vague, and more specific, I think! And you didn't answer my question about WL breeders, also breeding for pigment? Don't you think that happens?
