gimme10mins

I was wondering if it is common for a puppies ears to go up and down. I have owned German Shepherd puppies before but whenver I have purchased them their ears have always been up. I have a four month old female and she has the right ear up and her left ear was up real strong, but about a day ago it just fell. Is this common? When would it be considered a problem.

yes, this is very common, the pup is probably teething and the ears go up and down with that. no problem

Do you feel the seller/importer of a dog has any obligation to the buyer if the dogs ears do not go up?

POTLICKER, not if you didn't have an agreement/guarantee. Ears can be affected by lots of handling (when small children constantly mess with them, or by other dogs messing with them). So whether it be genetics or environment unfortunately it can't be proven and unless you have a guarantee and it specifically includes ears I would not expect any importer to claim responsibility.

Gimme10mins, if the ears were up well then they will return to the proper position and there is generally no need for alarm. Most are up by eight (8) to ten (10) weeks of age, but will flip/flop when the adult teeth are emerging. Allow the puppy ample chewing exercises, as the muscles that work the jaws are very connected with the muscles that move the ears. The only time that one must be concerned is when sixteen weeks have passed and the ears have never risen. At that end they may need to be braced, but you still have four (4) more weeks before serious concern applies. Bob-O

GIMME10MINS IT IS COMPLETELY NORMAL. IT HAS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE THAT YOU SHOULD GIVE THOSE EARS A CHANGE TO COME UP ON THEIR OWN. MOST OF THE CALCIUM WILL BE GOING TO THE TEETH INSTEAD OF THE EARS. MY RULE IS...IF BY 6 MONTHS THE EARS ARE NOT UP, THEY MIGHT NEED A LITTLE HELP. I DON'T RECOMEND USING TAPE OR GLUE. I HAVE USED A METHOD IN THE PAST THAT GAVE ME GREAT RESULTS ON A 10 MONTH FEMALE. HER EARS ARE NOW PICTURE PERFECT. IF BY THAT TIME YOU ARE STILL HAVING CONCERNS, YOU CAN EMAIL FOR ADVISE... GOOD LUCK!
