Our 11th year old GSD had his hair in his belly coming out and the skin turning black and smelling bad, My sister Vet gave him medication told me to bath him twice a week in the areas infected with soup called Dermatyl by the Lab Pet's Pharma and after that dry him and place Brosin by laboratories Brovel ointment in the infected areas, in a few days results were awesome, redness gone and hair got back, he is doing wonderful!

Thyroid problems in older GSD especially females are rampant. Forget the vets and doing a lot of expensive tests. If the skin problems come back and they most likely will, give an animal based thyroid supplement and see if it helps. I have had two female GSD with the same type skin problems as they aged which the thyroid supplement cleared up. Antibiotics initially would clear up the problem but it always came back until I put the females on regular thyroid supplements. As I said don't waste your money on thyroid testing or Synthroid because the vets tested my dogs and said they were "within the normal range". However when I gave the thyroid they cleared up and stayed well so long as I gave the

Sounds like malassezia yeast infection. Here's a link... http://www.rottweilerhealth.org/pdfs/august_malasszia_paters_02.pdf
Scroll down to Table 1...the first item on the list is Acetic and Boric Acid...acetic acid is found in vinegar. Sometimes
simple solutions can work very well.

GSDBCDC, your dog is elderly and may have a compromised immune system. If your dog is itchy and scratching a lot, I would check for demodicosis. It is a simple skin scraping and there is medication for that. We had it in our old guy and used ivermectin to cure it. But you must not take the advice from this forum, but do the test at the vet.
