Can anyone please tell me what exactly is meant when someone says "He must be clear in the head"?..or when they say "He is clear headed"?
Does this mean that he must have a beautiful head?..or does it mean he has a good brain?..or does it mean something else?
Thanks

brains and solid nerves, knows the difference between biting the bad guy and biting your child.

Excellent answer, 4pack. A bit more: No "ghosts" in the skull directing his behaviour. The ability to differentiate threats real or percieved. The ability to switch "full-on" to "full-off."

exactly right....
Also hear remarks like civil, sharp, defensive, these can all be an indication of being clear headed or not..

Absolutely 4pack...I'd like to expand by what I've seen, correct me if I'm wrong...
Not clear in the head:
During protection some dogs are SO explosive and drivey to a fault. Their head is racing a mile a minute and is difficult for them to control themselves. These dogs usually have problems with obedience and control during bitework. Eyes dialated, chirping with excitement, utterly obsessed and focused on the "bad guy" aka helper. Sometimes "exploding" on their handler when being corrected for obedience during bitework.

CONFLICT The dog must resolve the issue to gain clear headedness. Some dogs do this easily and others well not so easily.

good info all..
Guess that goes to the ones that will not out......

realcold, nice explaination...
I'd say a dog can gain clear headedness through teaching, training and learning what is expected, like you said some dogs do this easily and some not so....
