I have a Sch. 11 8 year old male that has not bred for 2 years and a friend wants us to breed him with his 2 year old female. Should I have him checked to make sure he still has plenty of sperm, or what (if anything) can I do to ensure she gets pregnant? My female had 6 puppies with him 3 years ago, but will his sperm count be the same, or does he have less now that he is older??

Just cut him loos and you see the result in 62 days :-)
Merry Christmas and a happy new year

Sperm take a long time to mature to the end that they are useful. I don't remember exactly, but recall about a two-month time period from their "birth" if you will to the end where they are "useful" if you will.
There is research to say that a dog who is more sexually active tends to produce more and healthier sperm. In your case what will happen? I think that Mike has the best answer here.

the first breeding will probably be a wasted one, but the second and etc if his sperm is viable, they will be good. The only way to know is to take him to the vet to get him collected/checked (remember first collection after 3 years will probably not look so good) or breed her and see if she gets pregnant - not much else you can do - he either has it, or he doesn't.

Agree with Molly, or save the vet expense and let the dogs breed once a day until she doesn't accept. See what mother nature does.

I plan on seeing if she is receptive at about 7 or 8 days after she goes into heat (First drop of blood was yesterday). After they breed for the first time, should I go the traditional every other day, or every day?

We did my bitch every day. She accepted for 8 days. Since your guy could be shooting blanks the first couple times, I'd let them go for it every day to get his stuff kickin down there. =)

zmeli, I mate them every other day with good success, I think it works better.

Thank you all for your input. I don't think we'll have any problems, he is very healthy and is very willing to breed.

I suggest going to your vet before you need to breed her, preferably a week or so, and getting your male ejaculated, so his sperm will be replenished, and the week for his count to build up again, thats what we did with mine for his second bitch he bred, in that litter of three breedings he produced 14 puppies, 13 of them live...Just a suggestion.
