This is new to me, but apparently ppl have had/heard stories about ppl being falsely accused of crimes so they can confiscate their (in high demand) dogs and "rehome/steal/sell" them......pls share your stories and locations

I haven't heard too much about it but there are some cases that either need crooked cops/AC officers to be pulled off - if the dog is taken from someone who is not arrested or charged with any criminal offense.
I've only heard of one such event in my area. It involved a puppy. The AC officer involved was charged with animal abuse and resigned. A dog trainer wanted the puppy but could not get the AKC regs from the owner or the breeder. So instead of just returning the puppy, it was dumped into a rescue. They were told (falsely) that the owner had abused the dog but the trainer was just pissed off, and he did not want an unregistered dog.
The dog was last heard of somewhere in another rescue in Nebraska. The owner was never able to find it and have it returned.

Either way they couldn't get the dogs papers, and I don't really see much demand for unregistered dogs?

Since there are many that are more interested in a dogs abilities than it's papers in the working dog world, I would think there could be a tidy profit to be make on taking dogs with real talent. Even less valuable dogs that have a cutesy appeal can be profitable with a quick and voluminous turnover, there is always a market for cheap dogs of the right kind. There are numerous "rescues" in the UK that take in sweet little unwanted pets and sell them through the freeads at "priced to sell" rates without having to spend a penny on obtaining them or keeping them.and have a high enough turnover to make a bit of a living under the radar. Whether it goes on in official Local Authority pounds does not sound too likely though, in UK these are always under scrutiny as Local Authorities are keen to preserve their public image and any hint of scandal would be the death knell of a council contractor. May well be a different matter in US, but I doubt it is so different and I doubt the profit would be enough for a LEO to risk his job and pension.

had a person in the GSDCA club I was in for years who was also a city AC officer. I don't remember all the details, but they were caught taking dogs and I think selling to research labs. It happens.

I hadn't considered that aspect Rik, in UK research animals are closely monitored and can only be used if obtained from specific and well regulated sources, Impounded dogs are kept close track of and any pound owners have to keep accurate records of what happens to each dog and when, including names and addresses of adopters and veterinary authentication of destruction.

If they can sort the paperwork for their source, they don't need the
real / registration paperwork for the dogs themselves, to transfer them
into labs.
We do have some official controls, but how well are they policed ?
You do hear some very fishy stories about dogs (and other animals)
used in research, even here, even now. Whether Local Authority
shelters are in the mix, I don't know. I have certainly heard some
stuff re Police Officers / Dog Sections that I didn't like the sound of,
from time to time - bit difficult to prove anything like this, though.
