I will be taking 3 of my dogs for hips and elbows in early March. 2 are females.
My question is what effect does there heat cycle bring to the table? I used to know
there cycle to the week. I brought in a new female last August, and since then, the cycles
are all over the place. Haven't been able to nail down cycle times. Looks like one of the females going for ex-ray
is getting ready to cycle. Should I wait? Any suggestions would be great. Take care      Pete

Best to wait hormones can cause laxity in the joints .

x-ray 1 month after completion of heat.
if heat cycles are all over the place, you might want to have your female checked for plumbing problems.

According to a study by the PennHip people, joint laxity does not change during heat cycles. It *does* change during pregnancy.

Thank you bee, sm, and BT. Your thoughts confirm mine. Christine, I will research the Penn hip study. I respect all your opinions. Take care

Q. Is it possible that the outcome of the distraction index is different if a female dog is in heat or around this time? Because of the hormones I can imagine everything is a bit looser, does this also counts for the round ligament? Do we have to advise people to let their dogs PennHIP between the two heat periods?
A. There is no scientific evidence to support this commonly held view. In fact, a previous study from Penn showed that, despite the hormonal fluctuations during the estrus cycle, there was no statistically significant difference in the DI, ie. joint laxity does not change during the heat cycle (Hassinger KA, Smith GK, et. al. Effect of the Oestrus Cycle on Coxofemoral Joint Laxity. VCOT 10: 69-74, 1997). For this reason, we will recommend PennHIP evaluations on dogs even during estrus. Interestingly, there was no change in OFA score either whether dogs were in estrus or not.

It's in contrast to what I had always been told, and thus believed, but I find it difficult to argue in the face of hard data.

Blackthorn, exactly what I was told by vet specialists here in Slovakia, the heat has no influence on the laxity of the joints. The pregnancy has as the body of the female is prepared for the delivery, the same with people.Makes sense to me,
