Sunsilver

by Sunsilver on 22 February 2013 - 13:02

I just resuced a beautiful shepherd from West Virginia. It turns out her former owner is Chinese and doesn't understand English. She is obviously registered, and has an ear tattoo. I would like to write him a letter so I can find out more about her, and maybe even get her papers.

Is there anyone out there who is fluent in both Chinese and English, and can help me out with this?

When animal control asked him what the dog's name was, it seems he repiled "Aaaaa'!  Roll eyes   So, obviously a bit of a language barrier there, unless he's planning to name his next dog 'Beeeee'!

The down side is that "he was Chinese" could mean anything.  It is kind of like saying "he was Anglo Saxon."  There are many different languages that are oriental based.

I have some friends that are Vietnamese and some that are Japanese.  I can ask if they will translate a letter for you.  PM me.

Fawn, I used to live and work in an area that was heavily Chinese, from Hong Kong. 99% of them spoke Cantonese.  Mandarin is another major language. For awhile, I dated a guy who was Hakka Chinese. He didn't speak Cantonese at all, and when his father died, his mother had to help him with the funeral service, as it was in Mandarin, and he didn't speak THAT, either! Japanese and Vietnamese are totally different languages from Chinese. They use different styles of writing, and the Japanese HATE HATE HATE the Chinese!  I am sure neither group will be proficient in Chinese. It's like asking an Italian to write a letter in German.

Can you read the tattoo?

My BFF is Taiwanese, and she speaks Mandarin and several other Chinese dialects, and Japanese.  She also reads/writes Chinese/Japanese (for all the Japanese snobbery, they have been using the Chinese writing sysem for 1000s of years altho the use of the newer Japanese "alphabet" is spreading).  It might be easier for her to call the former owner thought.  I'll PM you.

Ok.  I was not aware you knew for sure it was Chinese; I was thinking this was info passed to you from the shelter.  Sadly, in my area, anyone with oriental descent is labeled as "Chinese" and no thought that there are other countries and different languages.

Valerie, would you PLEASE PM me? I think I can get the former owner's phone number!

Tracking the tattoo had lead to nothing but dead ends!  Sad Smile

I have been able to provide the shelter with proof Gracie is spayed, so I will be getting a $50 refund. The initial rehome fee was $70, so my total costs for this dog are $20 plus gas and one night's lodging.

Okay, NOT counting the vet bills for when she bit my male GSD... What Smile

Not too shabby for a purebred dog that's obviously registered somewhere. Our training director is really pleased with her drive. She loves the tug, goes nuts for the flirt pole, jumping 3 feet in the air, and when introduced to the bite pillow was VERY reluctant to surrender it!

And she's got a great nose, too!

There are lots of other potential schutzhund candidates out there in shelters, folks. Don't let them wind up on the wrong end of a needle!  Sad Smile

Sunsilver, there's a smart phone app that translates that includes several different Chinese dialects for business use....you might try that route if all else fails.

Jackie, given my hearing disability, that would be very much a LAST choice!   I can only imagine how such an app would mangle the English translation. I've had too much experience with Babelfish to want to go there!

If anyone has Valerie's e-mail or other contact info, could they please give her a shout?
