I finally neutered Fidu. Last month i decided to neuter him, because he showed more and more dominant attitude toward me. He growledat me severals more times. Now  he is more relaxed less anxious. But I am worry about his hips, because his muscles will be reduced and he has very heavy bones. I wonder if someone  has some experiencie in neutering german shepherds. I dont now if it was a good decision and the worse is that it is irreversible.

I think if he had an unstable, aggressive temperment you did the right thing!

Thanks Cmill. Siantha, he was 16 month old when he was neutered. I waited untill he was fully developed.

That is waaay too young to be neutered. Did you tried seeking out professional traininng that deals with aggression prior to neutering? What did your breeder tell you to do? Perhabs this dog wasn't properly matched to you? The cemestry between the both of you are probably not there, and that replacing him with a more suitable dog was a better solution?

Brittany thats a bit extreme. As someone who spends most of her free time rehoming dogs, I would rather the owner neuter the dog then rehome him. Then they can work with a trainer if they need to.

You should try finding a reputable trainer in your area. They can help you with these problems sometimes there's a very simple solution. If you know how to work with your dog. Sometimes the problem is very simple and we just don't see it sometimes the problem is with us not with the dog and sometimes the problem is with the dog but a reputable trainer can help you figure all that out.

Barb, Neutering isn't a behavior modification technique. Neutering and spaying is good for 1 thing... to prevent an unnecessary breeding and to terminate fertilization and the mass production of male semen.

long time ago I attended a Schutzhund seminar with my dog, Jake (The dog that you see on my avatar), who was not neutered. To everyones surprised, as we were talking about schutzhund, my dog decided that he was going to try to bite the hosts kids face without any proper cause. He was very close to doing it too had I not held on to his leash. I stood straight up from my chair, and started giving my dog the corrections (He had the prong collar on) that I made sure he would never forget. To the eyes of an uneducated citizen would probably had called the police on me for animal cruelty. That is just how hard I was giving my dog his corrections, and Jake was a soft dog too. Not once did the idea of neutering him came across my mind. Jake, at the time, needed to be put in his place, and to be taught a lesson. He needed intensive training.

Ever since the correction he never once tried biting a child again. In fact he would tried licking them to death. He was lucky because had he tried pulling that stunt again he would be taking his last trip to the vets office and getting the white and the pink liquid injected into his veins because I cannot afford a lawsuit for a dog bite. I can't afford to pay peoples medical cost when I'm stuggling as it is to pay my own.

Agreed that neutering is a crap shoot for using for behaviour modification,
but not that 16 months is 'way too young' for preventing conception, if you
do it for that reason.

Going back to the OP's original concern about Fidu's hips and muscles,
why do you seem to think its automatic his muscle mass will drop ?  He
might be less dominant, doesn't mean he's less active.  This is like the
'all neutered dogs automatically get fat' stuff;  they don't, not if their human
doesn't let them.

I have considerable experience around both neutered and unneutered
GSDs, of both sexes;  my bitch who had a UK hip score of 29:31 was spayed
@ 3.5 yrs,  she never got fat,  (weighed 27-28 kg all her adult life);  she main
-tained her muscles fine, and was still using all 4 legs properly at age 13.
Arthritis only set in during her last year, reducing the use of her hind end a bit,
and she was p.t.s @ a month from her 14th birthday.

Hi hundmutter thankyou for sharing your experience with your gsd, it ia very valuable to know that experience, but  im about to cry reading these posts. I use to spay ever dogs and cat I find even the stray ones, but never a big one. Fidu is fatter and i chaged his food.
His breeder offered to take fidu from my home and socialize him as a guarantee. But my vet told me that he was going to suffer, because the conditions are very different, at home he lives with his girls in a closed pack and with me and everythings are OK for him, playing and wandering free, he could  not live far from us, besides i am sure he respec the trainer but with me he would continue with the same behaviur .
I took that extreme dicision when I was with the breeder who is one of  the best trayner here in may country, (he take some dogs to the wusv every year) thinking of buying a girl,  and i saw there his brother who was retuned because he became uncontrolable. When i bent to take a photo when he was outside the kennel, he trayied to attak me exactly Fidu use to do with others pointing to their face, I took adventage to ask him why both of two grandfather of Fidu were descalified from the last wusv and he told me that they did`n release the sleeve. I refused to take a new girl beacuse he only had a 6 mounth old and i was afraid Fidu doesnt accept her. After that Fidu trayied to attak me two more times, i felt that he was more and more dangerous, although i know Fidu would never hurt me but he scared me. So that I decide to spay him. Now Fidu chaged his attitud towar me and he doesnt compite any more, he is like a pet with me, because he doesnt compite with me for being the leader,(i think), but I am very worry, very very sad thinking that he could have dispalsia because of me, I asked the vet before to castrate and he assure me it will not cause that desease. Yesterday I read an article on the other forum about neutering and dispalcia in big dogs and i was very afraid for Fidu, however i Know that generally veterinarians and laboratories are against neutering because they lose customers, but it made me to think i could damage him.

This is a video of his brother. Of course Fidu is different he is more friendly with people although he is astute and wait the for mischief. As everybody ask me to separate Fidu when come home because they are afraid of him, has never happened an accident.
