I have been breeding for years and I take my bitch in for her ultrasound at 4 weeks and I take her in a few days before her whelp date for 2 views of X-ray to make sure how many puppies are in there for three reasons.
1. To make sure all of the puppies get out safely
2. To make sure my female is not in distress and may need help whelping a puppy that has not come out
3. To make sure all of the people on my list, towards the bottom, know for sure they are guaranteed a puppy.
We have always kept in touch with families who have purchased puppies from us, Our Bitch has a Facebook where everyone goes and post pics of their puppies as they grow so we can see them over time and we have yet to have one problem stem from an X-ray or any other problems. It's not like we sell the puppies and never keep in touch. If something is wrong, they all know I want to know.
I can't imagine getting ready for my bitch to whelp and not know how many puppies are in there for her safety. If the X-Ray shows 9 puppies and only 8 puppies come out, you can bet we are loading up mom and puppies and heading to the vet immediately after a period of time that would tell me she is in distress. I highly recommend X-Ray prior to whelping puppies for peace of mind and for the health and safety of Mom and Puppies!!!!
Anyone who wouldn't do that is not a responsible beeder.

that is BS, there are many dogs whelp puppies with no problems, i would do an xray if not sure if all the pups are out., but saying if you dont your a bad breeder , what crap..............

There is so many other detrimental things that constitute an irresponsible breeder...this one is pretty low on the totem pole.......sorry

I have never xrayed prior to whelping, though twice I have done an ultrasound close to whelping date,
1 time because I was sure the bitch was only having a small litter and yes only i puppy seen .. she required a caesar on due date.
1 time because I was sure that the bitch had a huge litter on board and sure enough she had 12.
Other than that all of my bitches have delivered with no problems and all without doing xrays
