I need suggestions, please. I am building very nice runs that have a sidewalk-like foundation. I am worried the the dogs will start developing callouses (sp?) or losing hair when they lay upon it. What is a good covering. Is there some sort of rubber paint that I might use? If you have found something that works, please also let me know where I might find it. One more question, where can you purchase one of those dog trailers that you pull behind your car? Thank you

How about those cow mats that Ed Frawley talks about in his puppy videos? They are big rubber mats that he claims to be great for crates which are a good source for padding and easy to clean. The only other thing I could think of would be astro turf, not the cheap stuff but like what they use on pro fields or those nice private university fields.

Then again, the astro turf may be a little too easy to rip apart. I just thought about my dog and his grass eating habits, so maybe disregard my astro turf comment.

We use horse mats cut into whatever size we need with a carpet knife. Each dog has one in their kennel to lay on.

Horse stall mats are fine, but the horse trailer mats are far easier to handle, and are of the exact same stuff

Rubber horse mats are great! Easy to clean, impervious to disinfectants, good footing, easy on the feet and joints, allergen-free, nearly indestructible. They're heavy, not inexpensive, but you'll NEVER have to replace them.

There is also a very viscous rubberized surface paint, poured on, seamless, permanent, "better" race horse stable are using in their barns. Probably beaucoup bucks, but definately NICE if you can afford it!

You can even use the 2 Part Epoxy Paint, It's a heavy epoxy. but not as expensive, typically used on garage floors things like that. Found at Home Depot, and I'm sure other Paint Supply stores as well. Hope that helps. We use it in the shelter.

It isn't toxic? Do the dogs chew it off or is it pretty durable? The horse mats sound good too, but if I remember correctly from my equine childhood, they are usually black. It gets so hot here in the summers. My runs are 10-30feet by 30 feet, but I am just covering a cement sidewalk on the perimeter...

The 2 part expoxy paint will not come off. We used that stuff on our aircraft hanger decks. Also, that stuff isnt very soft either and it will kind of stick to your skin to make a nice burn, kind of like carpet burn from the rub. I wouldnt want my dogs confined to that surface.
