Hi to all my German Shepherd lovers. I'm looking for a male german shepherd about 18 to 20 months that is good with kids from newborns on up do to the fact that my wife is expecting and we have three kids ages 5,11 and 13. looking for DDR LINE male that will fit right into our home as well as protect my family when I'm away at night at work especially with crime on the rise. I am no stranger to the breed have had shepherds before but I really put my homework in on what I'm looking for in this male. I'm located in Indiana so would prefer a breeder in my area but open to a road trip.

Be very picky. The DDR fad is not as hot as it once was, but,
there are still loads of those churning out 'DDR type' puppies
and dogs that are breeding solely for color & head size.
Since you are in IN and like the looks of the DDR type dog,
I'd recommend you make a trip to see Bill Kulla and his dogs
at http://www.kulladogs.com/index.html
He has some very nice males that are producing size, bone,
substance, deep color, and above all else, solid nerve and
temperment with good overall health. Those last three things
are the most important when it comes to selecting another
dog to add to your family. Especially when there is children
involved. Find a good breeder first, perhaps open up your
criteria a little in regards to the 'DDR' type and work with the
breeder who will help you every step of the way. Try to find a
breeder that works, trains, titles and health checks their dogs,
has dogs from their own previous breedings that they are moving
forward with in their program as well. Those types of breeders
can tell you all the good and bad, and will be able to show you
an example of what they strive to produce.
And like Keith said, above all else, Good Luck!

Why a male?...
If I were looking for a very protective dog to watch over my children, and it would be the only dog
a female would be much better, they are easier to train, and have a natural mothering instinct when
it comes to the little ones hanging off them and maybe pulling on their ears, as you are looking for an
older dog that you will have to trust that the breeder is telling the truth about it's temperament around children.
On second thought.....get a younger male pup, 6 months or so, he should be housebroken by then, and will grow with your children, not be in the adolesent stage,

I agree with workingdogz...you're limiting yourself by only considering "DDR" lines...you should just be looking for a good working line dog. You may or may not have a problem finding the right dog that is the age you're looking for, has the qualities you want and will easily integrate into your existing family. DDR doesn't exist anymore......its just a sales ploy.
The DDR kennel ended when the wall was taken down in 1980's.
Its been 30 years since this kennel was closed.
They were bred to be border controll dogs to attack anyone trying to escape the country ......they were not bred to be social pets, or family members....

UH............the country had a kennel, which focused on border patrol dogs, it was run by the country and the pedigrees said DDR.......but that was 30 years ago.......when the wall came down, there was no longer a reason for the kennel and it was defunded.

...the DDR dogs were not all "border patrol" bloodlines...some were bred by families. Some were bred for herding...not to be killing machines. And there are still people breeding 100% DDR bloodlines, but whether or not you want what they are producing is another matter.
