Just wondering if anyone out there has before and after pictures of their dogs before and after being on raw diets. I'm still kinda toying on the idea of switching my dog or not.

Why do you want to change your dogs diet from kibble to raw if you don't mind me asking?

Well currently she is on Nature's Domain Turkey and Sweet Potato from Costco, and she does fine on it. But looking at the ingredients, there is a few iffy things in there, and I do want her eating the best food possible, 'cause she's my buddy and I want her around for a long time.
She also worries me a bit, because she will eat her kibble, and then drink a TON of water (I keep her away from it for awhile, to let her tummy settle), but I'm afraid she is going to bloat doing that.
I've heard that there are some very nice changes that you will see from raw, and that the pros outweigh the cons, so to speak. And that it would be cheaper than switching her to a higher-grade of kibble. She is in good condition now - I don't think her coat could get much shinier, and even people at training comment on it. Top picture is full-coat, bottom one is her all shedded out and in heat.

I have seen a LOT of improvement from switching my cat and our other dog (mutt) to grain-free - they both have wonderful coats (and I didn't think the cat's could get much softer as it was... now it is AMAZING). Yapper's skin problems disappeared (he still gets ear infections though)and his coat got much nicer... and Cheyanne's coat got much thicker and actually went DARKER (she is black, but was going brownish, which I've heard can be due to chemicals in commercial food)... they both got LOADS more energy which is awesome. Yapper acts like a puppy, but he is 13 now, and Chey is just as insane as she was when she was a kitten now. She RACES around the house every night and generally wreaks havoc like any good kitty should. LOL She is 8 years old now and was kind of starting to slow down before I switched her over - and I'm glad I did so. I'd like to take the next step up and see how they'd be on raw also, but Yapper is not my personal dog so it's not my decision, and Chey won't eat anything but kibble. The only thing I don't like about switching her to grain-free kibble is that I have to add probiotics to it every day, or she gets the runs. I'm curious if raw would work better with her, or the same. She is also a "grazer"... if she eats too much at once (which she tends to follow-up with racing around like the psycho she is) she will throw up, so I'm not sure how that would work with raw food...
I know there are pros and cons and I have been doing my research when I can. I have heard good things though, and if it will improve the health of my girls (and Yapper, if it comes to that), I'm all for giving it a shot.

Do you put water in your food before you feed it?

by CMills on 03 February 2013 - 03:02

Dogs that eat kibble, in my experience, drink 2-3x more water as dogs on raw. Kibble has had all the water removed. On raw you will notice a dramatic difference in how much less they drink.
I havent found too many kibbles where the manuf doesnt add salt. Makes them thirsty, thirsty

Before you decide to switch I would reccomend that you have a total blood panel done on your dog. I would suggest one that evaluates all of her mineral vitamin and amino etc.levels. You then have a base line to evaluate her actual state of health and then if you switch you can repeat blood work after 6 months and evaulate if the diet has truly effected her well being, will aqlso give you the info to know where to tweek her diet

I had a Corgi pup who was on raw and her littermates were not. There was quite a difference between the lone raw fed puppy and her sisters. I posted the pics once and had someone belittle the puppy, so not going to post again. If you want to see them, you can probably do a search and find the thread. It was a huge debate on raw vs kibble and lots of good info.
