To all SCWT owners, This is Cassie, (AKC Registration info Goldkist Cassie II, RN14605502) , DOB 07/03/07, Cassie died on 01/26/13, 5 years old, from PLN disease. This is my second Wheaten (from the same breeder) to die of this disease (Goldkist II, Daisy, RM288211/02, DOB 07/26/99 - died 08/15/06). PLN is a horrible disease that attacks the kidney function, with no cure and is fatal. Please have your Wheatens checked for this disease. If found to be present, your vet will know what meds to prescribe to help fend off the advances of the disease and give your Wheaten some quality of life for a time. The University Of Pennsylvania School of Vet. Medicine is doing an ongoing research study into this disease and there is opportunity to send your dogs DNA swab in for analysis (for a small fee). You will get results back to either confirm that your dog has the PLN gene marker or not. It is worth the investment for the peace of mind. Additionally, potential buyers now have the opportunity to request that breeders have this swab test done on both parents to insure no PLN markers are present in the adults.
