We're at the beginning stage of teaching Bosco to weave between Martin's legs. So far, Martin has one treat in each hand that he uses to lure Bosco through two figure 8s. Bosco only gets fed when he sits next to Martin after doing two figure 8s.

The weather is miserable here (freezing rain) so it's fun to teach Bosco to weave since it can be taught in our tiny living room. This is what stage we are currently at:

Does anyone here teach weaving? We're not sure what the next step should be. Martin thinks he'll try only using the treat in his one hand to get Bosco started in the figure 8 but then he'll reward Bosco with a treat after he completes a figure 8 (instead of two figure 8's).

All suggestions are appreciated!

He is so big! I can't believe it. How much does he weigh? What exactly are you training him to weave for? I've never taught a dog to weave legs so I'm useless with advice haha.

Bosco does 'doggy dancing' very well, so far !  Good one.Regular Smile

PS Martin's timing with that food lure is pretty awesome too - all very
smooth.

"He is so big! I can't believe it. How much does he weigh?"

In ideal condition, Bosco weighs 93 lbs. He's a bit heavier right now since the weather has been so miserable (either minus 15C or freezing rain) and we're wusses. All the puppies in his litter turned out to be large GSDs (both parents are within the standard). He's surprisingly agile and can contort his body to catch anything.

"What exactly are you training him to weave for?"

Martin watched Greg Doud's video and saw Austin weave during the heel (around 4:58). Martin thought that it looked really fun so he's trying to figure out how to teach it. It's also really helped Bosco to realize that his bum is actually attached to him (he's more than just a head). It's also an exercise that can be taught in our tiny living room.

I found youtube videos on how to teach the beginning stages of the weave (where Bosco is at) but nothing that shows the next stage.

"PS Martin's timing with that food lure is pretty awesome too - all very smooth."

Do you know what really irks me about Martin? He can feed with both hands for a recall! I have practiced feeding with both hands for HOURS in front of a mirror and it's a hot mess. Darn it!!

Since a few folks have asked me, here's the video that we used to base our training on to teach Bosco (and Senta) the beginning stage of weaving a figure 8.

Very cool video of Greg Doud and his dog! With his agile leaps, soon Bosco will be doing front flips mid-heel ;)

@andhourspass - Martin will be thrilled to teach Bosco one more thing. LOL.

The luring has to be phased out at some point, ask for the behaviour and if he weaves on his own mark it and pay it. Or try placing the foot forward as it will look in motion, once he is doing that reliably take a step forward. You may have to revert back to luring if he becomes confused. One minor caveat ; I have never taught this - my present dog is way too big, I am doing a little luring myself in trying to get others with experience to respond. But I do not think my observations are far off. The video looks really good, the dog is moving well and the human is doing a good job also, the dog just does not seem to need that much luring at this point. I would also highly recommend working with Greg personally or send him the video and ask him for the next step.

Ha, we do this on the move in our training class, and I end up looking like frankenstein stepping forward as I am quite short and my girl is well, a GSD LOL.  You should start to put a word to the movement as he is reliably doing it now (still using the lure) such as 'through', or whatever comes easy to you. This will allow you to dispense with the lure as you progress and reward on completion of the exercise.

Once he can go through without the lure, start taking one step forward using the word and extend to a couple of steps to complete and reward the exercise. You can do it still using the lure, but it won't be as easy, or look so smooth - once you introduce human and dog movement forward it can all become a tangle LOL. I prefer to get the activity to the word first !   They both look great ! Love to see people having fun with their dogs :)
