Absolute Devotion & Loyalty, That's a Dog

Absolute Devotion & Loyalty, That's a Dog
Captain sleeps on his owner's grave every night.

A German Shepherd dog, called Captain, has slept on the grave of his owner every night at 6pm for the last six years. The dog's owner Miguel Guzmán died in 2006.

According to Internet reports, Captain, the dog, disappeared while the family attended the funeral services. A week later relatives of Guzmán were visiting the cemetery when they were astounded to find the dog on the owner's grave.

The cemetery director reportedly says that the dog comes around each night at 6 p.m., and has done so for the past six years.

Even if this an Internet hoax (I have not verified that the story is true), we do know dogs in the past have expressed such absolute devotion and loyalty. This is who dogs are.

For those who maintain dogs don't really love - if this isn't love, what is?

On Saturday night, a bomb-sniffing canine fell to its death while doing a sweep of a high-rise parking lot near a hotel where Vice President Joe Biden was speaking.   The Belgian Malinois fell from the top of the six-story structure next to The Ritz-Carlton in New Orleans. Biden was there to speak at a fundraiser for Sen. Mary Landrieu, a Democrat representing Louisiana.   Agents rushed the canine to a nearby veterinary hospital in a motorcade, but veterinarians were unable to save the dog.   Secret Service spokesman Max Milien told CNN the death was a "tragic accident,” and a first. The Secret Service started its canine program in 1975 because dogs with handlers proved to be such an effective way of detecting explosives. The Secret Service uses Belgian Malinois, which are one of the four types of Belgian sheep-herding dogs. This alert, high-energy breed, which is often mistaken for a German shepherd, is popular a working dog for the police and the military.   For the Secret Service work, each dog and his agent-handler must complete 20 weeks of training. The dogs remain with their agents full-time, becoming a part of the family; when the time comes, the dogs will retire with their handlers.

CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. —

A local sheriff was devastated on Tuesday night after he said someone poisoned his dog.

The incident occurred just weeks after he took office.

Eyewitness News spoke with him on Tuesday night in Chester County and asked who could have done this to his innocent pet.

The 19-month-old German shepherd, A.J., was becoming pretty popular in Chester County, especially at local schools.

"The kids loved him. We always took him around to different places," said Sheriff Alex Underwood.

Underwood was the proud owner of the loyal dog he was training to become a K-9 at the department, but now he said A.J. will no longer have that chance due to a crime Underwood said he just can't understand.

"It's like taking a child, he didn't bother anybody," said Underwood.

He said he believes someone poisoned his dog late this weekend.

"This past Sunday when we were at the Martin Luther King parade here in Chester, we let him out in the yard just to play around until we got back," said Underwood.

Shortly after Underwood returned he said A.J. was acting oddly.

"He was actually foaming from the mouth, and stuff like that, and he eventually died right before daylight," said Underwood.

Underwood was recently sworn in as the first-ever African-American sheriff in Chester County.

He said A.J. was quickly becoming part of the team.

"Everybody knew him, I mean he was here. He'd be in 911, sometimes he'd be in my office, sometimes he'd be back in narcotics, he was just kind of, he was part of the family here," said Underwood.

He said they do have possible suspects, but he wouldn't elaborate.

Underwood only said these acts will not be tolerated.

"This is a criminal act, and anybody breaking the law in Chester, they better realize one thing definite, its going to stop, because we going put them in jail," said Underwood.

Capitan Dog Grave Owner Six Years

One loyal dog hasn't moved from his master's side for the last six years -- refusing to let even death part them.

German shepherd, Capitán, ran away from home after his owner and best friend, Manuel Guzman, died in 2006. A week later Guzman's family, who live in Cordoba, Argentina, found the heartbroken dog grieving at the gravesite, reported Dog Heirs.

"We had never taken him to the cemetery so it is a mystery how he managed to find the place," Veronica Guzman, Manuel's widow, told the Sun.

Every Sunday, for the past six years, the Guzman family has gone to the cemetery to visit both Manuel and Capitán. Although the dog often leaves the cemetery to spend a short period of time with his family, he always returns to the gravesite before dark.

"I don't think he wanted to leave Manuel on his own at night," Veronica told the Sun.

Cemetery director, Hector Baccega, said that staff at the cemetery in central Argentina are now feeding and taking care of the dog.

“During the day he sometimes has a walk around the cemetery, but always rushes back to the grave. And every day, at six o’clock sharp, he lies down on top of the grave and stays there all night,” Baccega told La Voz.

Although the Guzman family would like to take Capitán home with them, they understand the dog's immense loyalty to his best friend.

Thanks for the picture Gsdadmin.  I knew the picture in the blog wasn't right, but thought it was a touching story to share.
