Can you give me an idea on the length of the coat of the litters if the Dam is short haired and the Sire has a regular coat length? Is there any posibilities that the litter can be long haired or can have a double coat. thanks.

Assuming you mean the Dam's coat is non-Standard 'mole' coat (i.e. too short)
and Sire's is Standard / Show length, with some (limited) 'feathering' on mane,
belly, trousers, maybe,  their offsprings' coats will still depend on the family genetics.

If both dogs have undercoat, so have correct 'double' coats, the pups will all
have undercoats.  If only one of the parents has an undercoat and the other doesn't,
it is possible some of the pups will lack undercoat, but that may depend on the genes
carried by the parent  with  undercoat .

If both parents carry long coat genes from their families, you'll probably get some
long coated pups in their litters, even though mum & dad are not long coats themselves.
Can't predict how many exactly, that depends on how the gene combinations fall out in
the embryos, how many pups in the litter, etc.  Breed percentage of longcoats to
normal coats is in the region of  12  to 20 %.

NB - some very longcoated dogs have a limited amount of undercoat, if any.

Do you know anything about the animals in the pedigrees of these two dogs you are
asking about ?

My Dam gave birth to 6 healthy puppies last February 10, 2013. The first litter died becauuse my dam ate the first pup. I dont know the gender. I was surprise because the remaining litters seems to have long coat. 3 females and  2 Males. The 3 females are Black and Tan but the 2 Males are pure black.

Is there an emoticon for "throwing ones hands up in the air in exasperation" ???

by beetree on 16 February 2013 - 12:02

Hundmutter, will the above emoticon do?  A little hair pulling is involved, too, but I think it is a good solution for you.

Yours truly,
