Jindo Dogs are South Korea's national dogs and they are officially designated as South Korea's "Natural Monument No. 53". This though is a meaningless travesty! The Jindo Dog promotion project launched by government only serves to drive numerous Jindo dogs into the horrendous dog meat industry. According to the investigation by an animal welfare organization in South Korea (http://koreandogs.org/?p=4519), dogs that do not meet the breed standards set by the government, conducted biannually at Jindo county(the supposed Jindo dog protection area) are being sold to dog meat traders! The national monument ends up as dog meat soup. In the summer when the dog meat consumption reaches its peak, dog traders can drive by these villages as often as every 3-4 days collecting unwanted and rejected Jindo dogs. Their investigation reveals that the screening process for Jindo dogs is vague and subjective making the screening meaningless. The Kennel Clubs of the world stand by and allow this to continue. In a society where 2 million dogs are being eaten each year, this type of promotion only serves to line the pockets of certain people and drive the so called "ugly" Jindo dogs into dog meat markets. Most of all, their taxpayer's money is being spent in this process.
This is a shame and disgrace of South Korea. We ask the new president of South Korea, Honorable Geun-Hye Park, to put an end to this Jindo Dog registration program immediately and end the dog meat trade in South Korea once and for all. This will be the only way to restore the tarnished image of South Korea as an inhumane and cruel nation of animal abusers.

You know, having spent time in south korea....This isnt as much of a "popular" subject as some may think....I'm not denying that it does happen (as it could anywhere else on the planet) but keep that in mind....
I also "petition" that this be removed....What does it say about the OP to find any rumor possible to disgrace an entire nation.....less critical things could EASILY be placed and blamed upon any other nation on the planet...

And America never ate all those steers that were mustered in the Wild West ?
But there are Show Prizes for Cattle ... ?
I know the idea of eating dog meat sits uncomfortably on the stomachs of those
who live in the western world, but is it really so terrible in the context of less
other protein sources having been available ? What about France and horsemeat ?
Now, if you were talking about WELFARE issues, with capture and transportation
methods being criticised, that is a separate matter.

I lived in South Korea for 2 years from 2008 - 2010. While I was there in Osan I saw dead dogs MANY times in the markets. Let me tell you, it's horrible! The worst part is the dog is SEVERLY tortured before it's killed. This is believed to release energy in the dog which makes the meat more potent for men to eat. It is a TERRIBLE practice. The animal is raised in a tiny cage on dog farms. It's not a case of just raising the dog to eat it, but torturing it as well. It's a horrible and outdated practice that the South Koreans need to stop,

I thought predator meat didn't taste very good? I believe Lewis and Clark ate wild dog during thier expedition. However, to get back on topic, deceased pets in the united states are sent to "rendering plants", where they are boiled into a type of "meat meal" not suitable for human consumption. This byproduct does end up in certain brands of dog food and commercial animal feed. So don't think that dog meat doesn't end up in the food supply in the USA because it does. Some animal shelters and vets get paid by the pound turning over said unclaimed animal carcases.
