Hans, I have no idea how much training that you do with the dogs you sell. Most brokers / vendors sell "green" dogs and tracking is typically not done with these dogs. I do know vendors that sell trained dogs and offer. "Handlers" courses. I was not aware that you did that or had the facility to do that, you learn new things every day. I never said that I was the only one training dogs or my way was the best or the only way, exactly the opposite. If you want to talk training I'm ll for it, if you want to discuss tracking thats great. But, keep in mind I may disagree with some things you post and comment on it. I hope that would be ok.

Just to lighten up this topic a bit.  I have talked to Jason just now and he told me about Johnny last bite yesterday. The original pursuit was after stolen Crispy Cream donut truck so you can imagine the jokes going around now.

Jim,
I have what I have as far as facility goes. 10 ac of desert. You were here. Most training I do is in real areas in place though. Warehouses, abandoned buildings, hospitals , schools, dry  desert and humid south east. And I travel to PDs  when they request me. Often I do not even charge except expenses. I have worked with PDs from Oakland to Ga. across the country.
Jim I do not mind people disagreeing with me. I am still learning and accept all ideas with open mind and give credit for it. I am not stuck on stupid on one approach. As matter of fact I love problem solving and employing of different methods in order to get where dog needs to get. I do not believe much in dumping dogs. Jonny for example at first after he arrived did not want to even chase a ball. Look at him now. Problem solving helped. Johnny is now the  best LE  tracking dog I have ever been part of training hands down. One day I will make him and Jason a memorial. But by my experience I will say that 99% of PDs would dumped Johnny  in a heart beat. That is what I mean about training not being what it used to be. Not just applying rigid scheduler of a method but  figuring problems  out is not that common and that is what big part of training is in my eyes.

@ Slamdunc.......I definitely agree that the military and police training has improved from 40 years ago.....the scope of what they are asking the dogs to do is so much broader whether it is the variety of odors for drugs and explosives....to the differentiation in Swat, tactical, urban uses. Whole new world out there.....the dept I consult with is starting a bloodhound course(10 weeks) on the 19th of this month. They asked me to participate in the class in setting some tracks, etc. I will participate 3 days a week just for the knowledge aspect. I find a lot of value in many aspects of sport training....especially foundation work!   I like both of them and think both are major contributors to the breed and wish they would work together more,.... as sport breeding does drive the resource breeders of working dogs and I think that some of the intuitive work the GS does should be as important as drives....because in tactical situations you need a dog that can think and make decisions in drive.
