With the database being down this past week, I finally decided to explore some other sites. Leerburg, shepherd central, and germanshepherds.com won out. There were some good points to all three, but I'm glad to be home.
On one site, rescues were advertised. It brought to mind that breeders have a huge responsibility when placing a puppy, or even an older dog. Perhaps they should rethink their policy of shipping, (unless to extremely trustworthy people). If a buyer no longer wants the dog, it's in the pup's best interest if the breeder is in the vicinity and accessible to the distraught or simply uncaring jerk. Otherwise, that dog will just be dropped off at any shelter. Take a look:
www.germanshepherds.com/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB69
---young female sleeping on cold wet floor/Bartow, GA
---urgent: Depressed German Shepherd dumped by owners
All the dogs on these pages need a home. Just maybe, by bringing them some exposure this could be accomplished. Perhaps, someone knows someone that would like one of these deserving throwaways.

LMH,
The fact of the matter is that even selling dogs around a given area where a breeder does most of his/her business does not mean the dog will be returned to the breeder. I always check on the breeder of dogs I am asked to accept into my GSD rescue program. In ONE case, I was able to contact the breeder and she immediately made arrangements to take the dog back. In all other cases, and they are many such cases just in my personal experience, breeders (even those who say they will take a dog back) do not take a dog back because they always have some lame excuse that they have no room, etc. etc. Etc.
Nice thoughts you wrote, but not reality. The bottom line is for most breeders this is not about anything other than money and once the dog is sold, "hasta la vista" to the dog and the new owner.
Another good one is how so many breeders advertise they provide support, but they do not. When a pup turns out ill or injured, suddenly it is always the owners problem. All these situations often turn out then to be problems brought to my attention. I help where and when I can. But sadly, I can not take the 10 or more dogs I am asked to take every month.
Not everyone should have a dog, let alone a GSD. But green colors peoples' perception and too often breeders will sell a GSD to someone regardless. I turn people down right and left both for selling a GSD from a rare litter I have or adopting a dog out from my GSD rescue to people. Does it help to have ethics? Frankly, no, they just go somewhere else. As long as money rules the world and as long as people have no conscience, it will never change.

I hear you, hodie. Perhaps, I should have addressed my suggestion to "Breeders Who Really Care."
I'm astounded by how many people just dump dogs---and the ones that *get rid of* an older dog that they've owned for years---it's just incomprehensible.
I know of a couple a few blocks away from me that recently lost an old female. They lost the littermate two years earlier. Both had cancer, and underwent surgery. The female lasted longer. Wonderful, caring people. Truly, a family (have two young children, ages 6 and 8) that I would entrust a dog's well being to. The children are also dog savvy. Don't know if the grieving time was sufficient, but I'll give it a try and tell them to look at these 'rescue' dogs.

I have seen post on here about people selling and placing older dogs and the stress it causes on the dog. All this is true but, (SOME) breeders and kennels claim that this dog is this and this dog is ready for that title and its CRAP. I bought a beautiful bi-colored male off this site that was " ready for his BH" ...he was as ready for his BH as I am to perform open heart surgery. They claim he also had begun tracking (NOT)!! He now does corners and articles. They claim he had good bitework. Well, long story short, he is now for sale AGAIN. I've e-mailed the original owner (TWICE)and SUPRISE!! No response! I will be upfront with the new owner...he's a good CLUB level dog or SAR/PD, but far from a National competitor! I feel bad for the dog because of the future stress of being sold AGAIN but I do not have room for "rescue".

CMassGSD--
You're an idiot, and frankly, I have no time for idiots right now. We're not talking about dogs that are misrepresented and for sale.
We're talking about wonderful, loving companions that have been dumped by uncaring jerks at kill shelters. Start a new thread if you want to complain about bad breeders re-selling dogs. (Another, worthy topic, I'm sure--but, not here.)

Sorry I called you an idiot, but I had just seen the picture of that poor female again and reacted.
Forgive my rudeness.

Sorry for being an "idiot". Being such an "idiot" I haven't and wouldn't put this dog for sale on this site. I was commenting more on hodie's comment "The bottom line is for most breeders this is not about anything other than money and once the dog is sold, "hasta la vista"". Being such an "idiot" I've trained rescue dogs free of charge AND trained the people who rescue the dog, if needed. And being such an "idiot" my wife and I donate food to many rescue programs. And in case you didn't notice.....I was generalizing and purposely didn't name the breeder. My beef with them will be handled privately NOT on this board as many NAMELESS and FACELESS HEROES do on this board.

CMassGSD--
Surely, you must realize that your remark "I do not have room for rescue", after the desparaging remarks about misrepresented dogs might imply that a rescue dog would also be unacceptable.
Even if your post is entirely correct, it wasn't beneficial to helping these 'rescue' dogs find a home--hence, my idiot remark. Wrong time and wrong place for your post--nothing more.

I neither implied or said a rescue is unacceptable. I only stated the fact of MY situation. ANY breed rescue is a valuble and under appreciated program! That being said...I wish all the dogs good luck in finding a caring and loving home! No need for forgiveness. I understand!

CMassGSD-
Glad we're on the same page about these poor animals--maybe, some will get lucky and be in a new home for Christmas.
